REDFIELD — Ronald “Ron” Joseph Esser, 79, of Redfield, passed away Sunday, April 1, 2018, after a long battle with cancer at Community Memorial Hospital in Redfield.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 6, at St. Bernard Catholic Church.  Burial with military honors, will follow in St. Bernard’s Catholic Cemetery at Redfield.  Visitation will be Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Hyke Funeral Home in Redfield. A Scriptural Prayer Service and Rosary will begin at 7 p.m.   
Ronald “Ron” Joseph Esser was born January 23, 1939, in Redfield to Theodore and Louise (Haider) Esser. He graduated from Redfield High School. He was united in marriage to Marlys Ann Hilkemeier October 14, 1961. He joined the U.S. Army, serving for two years.
The couple moved to the family farm where they raised cattle and hogs for many years. In their free time, they enjoyed spending time fishing at the Missouri River. In 1997, he retired and spent many hours fishing with friends.
He is survived by his wife; sons, Jay (Deb) of Redfield, Darin of Rapid City; six grandchildren; siblings, Nadine Barry of McHenry, Ill., Charles (Sue) Esser of Redfield, and Madonna Servi of Wisner, Neb.  
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers-in-law,  Jack Barry, Delvin Hilkemeier and Gary Servi; and his hunting partners, Don Brand and Ron Betten.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Hyke Funeral Home.
