Rushmore edges All-Stars in OT

HURON — The Rushmore Thunder escaped with a 7-6 victory against the Huron All-Stars on Friday night at Bergman Arena.
The second-ranked Thunder, who improved to 8-1-1, tallied four goals in the opening period but carried just a 4-3 advantage into the second period.
After Rushmore put the first three goals on the board, Walker Schiltz found the net for the All-Stars on a power play. Carson Duba assisted on the play.
Less than a minute after the first goal, Huron pulled to within a goal as Tanner Berquist scored on an unassisted shot.
Just 33 seconds later the score was tied at 3-3 as Schiltz scored his second goal for the All-Stars on a pass from Lucas Snyder.
Rushmore would cap the scoring in the opening period with a goal in the final minutes to regain its advantage.
The Thunder then added to its lead with a pair of goals in the second period .
Sandwiched between the two Rushmore goals was Schiltz collecting the hat trick with a goal on a power play for Huron. He scored on a pass from Duba.

The Thunder carried a 6-4 advantage into the final period, but once again the All-Stars rallied to even the score. Cody Ruedebusch had the first of the two goals with Izaiah Phillips and Jayden Bogh assisting. Bogh had the second goal with the assist going to Foster Ferguson and Ruedebusch.
Despite rallying late, the comeback bid by the All-Stars would fall short as Rushmore had the final goal.
Cooper Letcher and Marty Boetel combined to stop 45 of the 52 shots by the Thunder. Letcher had 23 saves, while Boetel had 22 saves.
Huron, which is now 6-5, had 31 shots in the game.
The All-Stars game against Sioux Center on Saturday was postponed due to inclement weather. Huron will participate in the Brookings Tournament on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

JV boys
With two goals in each of the second and third periods, the Huron JV recorded a 4-1 win against Rushmore on Friday to improve to 4-5-2.
A yielding the game’s first goal to the Thunder in the second period, the All-Stars would score four unanswered goals to earn the win.
Andrew Areman opened the scoring for Huron with a power play goal nearly 13 minutes into the second period. He was assisted on the play by Will Burns and Ferguson.
The All-Stars then grabbed the lead with a goal by James Tharp in the final minute of the second period. Lucas Sibley and Michael Ready combined on the assist.
Ferguson had both goals for Huron in the final period. The first came on a power play and was assisted by Shaun Ready, while the second was unassisted into an empty net.
Boetel stopped 31 of the 32 shots he faced in the net for the All-Stars to earn the win.
Saturday’s scheduled game against Sioux Center was postponed to Jan. 28 at Bergman Arena.
