Ruth Orlou Anderson Berg was born  November 12, 1924, to Olive (Johnson) and Ludwig Anderson. She was born at her Grandma Oline Johnson’s farm home in rural Mount Vernon. She had one brother, LaVerne and a sister, Colleen.
Ruth grew up in Denver, Colo. She was married to Fred Heider and they had two children. She and the children moved back to South Dakota in 1947. For a time she worked at Hendricks grocery store in Woonsocket. A favorite pastime was playing and pitching on Woonsocket’s Women’s Softball team.
Being back in the area, Ruth got reacquainted with Vernon Berg. He had purchased a farm near Twin Lakes in 1947, after his military service during WWII. The Anderson and Berg families were friends in Colorado and South Dakota. Ruth and Vernon were married on December 4, 1949, at his sister’s home near Plankinton. They continued to live and work on the farm while raising four children, Mark, Joyce, Janis and Vicki.
Ruth was a homemaker and was known for her delicious roast beef dinners with all the trimmings and pecan pie. She had a special talent decorating and providing a warm and loving home. After 45 years on the farm, Ruth and Vernon retired to a new home in Woonsocket. They were members of Bethany Lutheran which is now Spirit of Faith Lutheran-Methodist Church. Ruth loved being part of Faith Circle and was active in all church activities.
Vernon and Ruth liked to travel and visited all 50 states and 14 foreign countries. Especially treasured were the Norway trips to visit her father’s family. She treasured family and friends and showed kindness and faithfulness especially remembering birthdays and other special events by attending or with a card or phone call. Favorite activities for Ruth were shopping with her sister and life-long best friend, Colleen, and travels with their husbands. Vernon passed away in 1998. Ruth has been a resident of Prairie View Healthcare Community since October 2012.
Ruth is survived by four children: Mark Berg of Sioux Falls, Joyce Brown of Blackhawk, Janis (Thomas) Weatherford of Ladora, Iowa, and Vicki (Richard) Linke of Woonsocket; and a sister, Colleen Swenson also of Woonsocket.
