HURON — Ruth J. Hornig, 95, of Huron, passed away Monday, January 17, 2022, at Avantara Huron.


Her Funeral Service will be 10 a.m., Saturday at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Huron with burial at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Yale.


Visitation, with her family present, will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday with a prayer service to begin at 6:30 p.m., at the funeral home.

Ruth June Marsh was born on July 2, 1926, in Yale to parents Francis “Niel” and Laurene (Currier) Marsh. Ruth’s mother passed away when she was nine years old; she was then raised by her grandparents, Frank and Elizabeth Marsh with help from her Marsh and Currier aunts and uncles. She lived in Yale during her childhood, graduating from Yale High School in 1945. Ruth moved to Mitchell where she attended Presentation School of Nursing at St. Joseph’s Hospital. After graduation, Ruth worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Mitchell and the University of Minnesota in St. Paul, Minn.


Ruth married Eugene C. Hornig on February 26, 1949, in Wilmont. After they were married, she and Eugene lived on the farm north of Cavour where they raised their family. Ruth was a devoted farmwife and mother. Her husband, children, and grandchildren were her life.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Yale, Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Huron and Lutherans for Life. She was active in her church, helping wherever needed.


She is survived by her children, Mary (Terry) Blue of Huron, Michael Hornig of Sioux Falls, Deb (Calvin) Pederson of Mina Lake, Betty (Stuart) Kuehl of Yale, Patty (Rod) Blue of Yale, and Jim (Patty) Hornig of Huron; 20 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Phylis (Lyman) Bich and Lorene Hornig; and many nieces and nephews.


She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene in 1998; her parents, Niel and Laurene; her grandson, Matthew Pederson; her son Mike’s fiancé, Betty Lou Spicer; her brother, Een Marsh; her sister, Mary Eining and her husband, Bill Eining; her brothers-in-law, Clinton Hornig and his wife, Gracie and Rev. Juraine Hornig.
