HURON — The Sanborn Central-Woonsocket Blackhawks got a measure of revenge Thursday night, defeating the Wolsey-Wessington Warbirds 53-45 for the 281 Conference Tournament title at Huron Arena.
The same two teams had faced each other for the hardware last year, with the Warbirds coming out on top of that matchup. But this year, the Blackhawks jumped out to an early lead and despite several attempts by Wolsey-Wessington held on for the win and the title.
Noah Dickson had 20 points and seven rebounds to lead Sanborn Central-Woonsocket in the game, helping the Blackhawks to a 13-7 lead after one quarter, a lead that they would never relinquish. The cushion swelled to 11 after three quarters.
Trey Weber and Trent Kingsbury each chipped in 10 points for Sanborn Central-Woonsocket, which improves to 9-2 with the win.
Tyler Babcock led a balanced Warbird effort with 10 points, as six other players notched at least four points on the night. Lynden Williams, whose last second jumper Tuesday night propelled the Warbirds into the title game, led the rebounding corps with seven boards.
Both teams shot better than 40 percent from the field and while SC-W had one more field goal, the Warbirds had three more three-pointers. The game was decided at the charity stripe, as Wolsey-Wessington made five its 10 free throw attempts, while the Blackhawks knocked down 14 of 19 - a nine point edge - in their eight-point win.
Wolsey-Wessington, now 7-3, will travel to Potter County on Saturday, while Sanborn Central-Woonsocket will travel to face Hanson on Tuesday.
