HURON — The Huron School Board of Education met to discuss current business in the Huron School District on Monday evening in the Instructional Planning Center at the Huron Arena.
Members of the board were honored for their dedication and time to the district and community.
“South Dakota School Board recognition week is Feb. 18-22,” explained Superintendent Terry Nebelsick. “We never take for granted the time that you offer in order to put the interest of the children and protection of the taxpayers at the forefront. Thank you for serving on our board.”
During the meeting, board member Terry Van Berkum noted that legislators have filed a House Bill that looks at how teaching controversial issues in the state are handled, which Nebelsick later introduced to the board  as a policy.
The policy highlights the opportunity for students to learn how to become effective citizens and develop the skills to analyze topics, and express opinions while being respectful to others.

A first reading of the policy will be heard at the next School Board meeting.
In the business manager’s report, it was noted by Kelly Christopherson that progress is being made in the high school and middle school facilities studies in order to maintain safety. Christopherson said, “Koch Hazard plans to have their final report and budget estimates to the board by the next meeting on Feb. 25.”
Washington Center Principal Beth Foss presented Administrative Assistant Mandy Hofer as employee of the month for February.
Vice President of the board Garrett Bischoff, discussed the Associated School Board of South Dakota Legislative Day, which will be held Tuesday, Feb. 19, in Pierre. This is a good opportunity for board members to get together, discuss issues and meet with local legislatures.
Nebelsick also mentioned in his report that training will be taking place this week for the faculty, in order to recognize the signs of children in crisis and intervene to provide the help and support which is needed.
In old business, the board approved policy changes in regard to student conduct on school busses. The policy  brings any issues to the transportation director, where they can  attempt to fix any potential conduct issues before they are brought to the principal.
Christopherson shared with the board that two proposals for online auction services were received for the school’s annual surplus auction. The board discussed the pros and cons of online auctions versus live auctions, plus the options presented from both Meyer Auction Service and Dakota Diamond Auctions.
The motion to approve lacked a second, and the item will appear on the agenda for the next board meeting.
In other business, the rehiring of administrators for the 2019-20 school year was approved in the consent agenda, plus congratulations and thank yous were extended to many in the district.
The next meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 25. The public is encouraged to attend.
