HURON — The Huron School Board of Education held its regular meeting Monday evening. The board approved the hire of seven new staff, one resignation and two contracts.

Madison 2-3 Center teacher Miss Clark and students presented the good news report on service TAP Community partnerships and random acts of kindness. Students read to the board that they participated in the United Way Backpack Program and CFI Project. In November, the TAP students collaborated with the United Way and Center For Independence. By adding a little fun to the weekend snack back packs, the children worked together bagging up crayons and stapling them to a coloring sheet, adding them to the backpacks.

Dr. Kraig Steinhoff presented his Superintendent’s report. Five school districts and the Huron Community Campus have collaborated to offer band to the 6th through 12th grade students, Hitchcock-Tulare, Wolsey-Wessington, Doland, Iroquois and Huron. The plan design as of now is 9th-12th grade students will have band. H/T, W/W, Doland and Iroquois will travel two times a week to have band practice together in the Fine Arts Auditorium at the Huron Community Campus. The instructor will travel weekly to each of the towns to provide 6th-8th grade band instruction and offer small group lessons for their 9th-12th grade band students.

A Fall semester and Spring Semester joint concert for 9th-12th grade band students will be held in the Fine Arts Auditorium at the Huron Community Campus.

Director of Transportation, Kathie Bostrom presented the Employee of the Month award to Willie Williams, Bus Driver.

In new business, the board approved a bid of $328,000 for the resurfacing of the running track at Tiger Stadium, using the 2023-2024 capital outlay budget, to be completed by fall, as well as a bid for $1,484,921 for the construction of four additional tennis courts and relocation of the water main, using ESSER 3 funds, with the goal to have the completion date before girls tennis starts in the fall.

A third bid, for $1,720,000 for air conditioning the Huron Arena, which exceeded the amount budgeted by 90%, was rejected.

Business Manager Kelly Christopherson commented that they were expecting a project in the 700,000 to 900,000 range, and there was a lot of interest in the project but when it came time to bid there was only one bid.

The next school board meeting will also take place April 11, at 5:30 p.m. in the IPC room on the second floor of Huron Arena. The public is encouraged to attend.
