HURON — Monday night Huron School Board of Education held its regular meeting.

Huron High School Principal Mike Radke presented the good news report. The 2020-2021 Tiger Stripes earned a superior rating in the South Dakota High School Activities Association Journalism contest, with Huron being only one of four schools to earn that rating.

“Mr. Carda and his foundations of technology class just received a 3D printer and are begining to learn to program it,” said Radke.

Enrollment will increase significantly over the coming years. The  high school is at 780 students, and in three years they could see up to  950 students.

“With that growth we not only add sections of classes that we already offer, we are going to try to expand what we offer as well,” noted Radke.

Radke explained that they are in the beginning stages of forming a relationship with Northern State University to be able to offer a dual credit class called introduction to education.

“Like most industries we’re struggling to find workers and hopefully this is one way we can grow our own to fill teaching spots down the road,” Radke explained. “In addition they are working on building the Educators Rising Group which is much like a group for FFA for agriculture but this is more for education, with the first event taking place Nov. 10, with a group of students and staff going to Dakota Weselyan University for the Fall Learning Expo.”

Superintendent Kraig Steinoff reported that the staff received 442 responses to the Portrait of a Student survey, and they will keep the survey open through this Friday, with a plan to bring a draft to the board in December still on track.

Amanda Reilly Director of School Nutrition, presented the October Classified Employee of the Month award to Lenore Carrels, School Nutrition at Madison Satellite.

The next school board meeting will take place Monday, Nov. 8 at 5:30 p.m., in the Huron High School Auditorium. The public is encouraged to attend.
