HURON — With every day’s report setting a new high mark for the state for active COVID-19 cases, Thursday’s release from the South Dakota Department of Health (DOH) also marked a numerical milestone as the state registered its 200,000th positive case of the pandemic.
South Dakota added 5,292 new positive cases over Wednesday and Thursday to bring the total number in the state during the pandemic to 200,496 unique positive cases.
A unique case is an individual not previously reported as positive. Cases are only reported as positives one time.
The state also noted 16 new deaths and 955 new recovered cases over the two-day period, to bring active cases to 24,796.
Before Tuesday, the state had never reported active cases above 20,000 state residents.
Thursday is the second consecutive day that an additional 2,000 new active cases were added to that tally.
Beadle County also moved past a numerical mark in Thursday’s numbers.
Over the two-day period, the county reported 68 new positive cases and 21 new recovered cases. Active cases jumped over the 300 mark, to 313.
Beadle’s milestone was crossing 4,000 positive cases during the pandemic, which was accomplished in Thursday’s DOH numbers. Through Thursday, Beadle County has reported 4,012 unique positive cases during the pandemic.
The Heartland Region saw a notable jump in active cases in the region after 145 new positive cases, one new death, and 35 new recovered cases were reported by DOH over Wednesday and Thursday. The seven-county region currently notes 682 active virus cases.
The new death in the Heartland was reported Thursday in Sanborn County. It is the county’s fifth death of the pandemic and the 139th virus-related fatality in the Heartland.
Following the spike of COVID across the state, numbers in schools in the state reached new highs for the year, by significant amounts.
The state’s K-12 schools reported 725 new positive cases over the week of Jan. 2-8. The previous high for a week was 474 in mid-September.
The 899 K-12 school systems in the state report 1,189 active cases in the state, with 135 school districts reporting three or more active cases among students and staff.
The 15 state colleges, universities, and technical schools also had a significant uptick, reporting 203 new positive cases over the week. The previous high was achieved the previous week at just 77 new cases.
State colleges currently report 296 active infections on college campuses across the state, with none clear of an active case and 14 of the 15 reporting three or more active cases among students and staff on campus.
