Speech Therapy
The speech therapy team at Buchanan School consists of one full time Speech and Language Pathologist and two full-time Speech and Language Pathology Assistants. We are currently working with approximately 110 preschool, kindergarten, and first grade students.

We work with some students to improve their ability to correctly produce speech sounds, in order to speak clearly and to assist them with learning to correctly state letter name and to produce the corresponding sounds. We also work with many students to improve their language skills. Some have deficits in vocabulary while others have difficulty with learning to combine the words in order to speak in sentences and with using the correct grammar when doing so.

We continue to use a variety of materials, techniques, and tactics to keep the kids engaged and learning while having fun. Kids unknowingly learn numbers, counting, colors, and shapes as well as learning good sportsmanship while playing games and working on improving their speech and language skills.

We feel that strong speech and language skills play a vital role in developing solid reading, spelling, speaking, and writing skills that they will use for their lifetime.

Algebra 1.1
A common question in Algebra class is, “when am I going to use this stuff?” Mrs. Schlader’s Algebra class will begin a unit to learn real-life applications for Algebra, to begin to answer this question.

The class will learn how determining unknown values in Algebra are used in shopping, painting and buying flooring.

Students will begin learning how to determine the correct quantities of food items when increasing or decreasing recipes quantities.

Students will then determine the per pound or per ounce cost of items, to determine the best value when making a food purchase. Students will also determine if a sale is really a good purchase.

Students also use the unknown variables and combining like variables to determine how much carpet to purchase for a room, and the cost per square foot or the number of floor tiles needed to cover a room.  Students will also determine the correct amount of paint to buy, when painting a room, as well as the cost of the amount of the paint purchased.  These lessons will begin to help the student to understand that Algebra is not just a bunch of problems with variables, and that the formulas do have actual real-life applications.
