HMS Art

The sixth-graders in art at Huron Middle School are learning about the elements of line and creating visual textures. After practicing drawing many different textures, students will create a texture critter by applying five different visual textures to its form.

Seventh-grade art students have finished the Vincent Van Gogh unit. Students learned how to layer oil pastels on construction paper to create a replica of Van Gogh’s “Starry Night.” This past week they finished the clay unit where they create coil pots and a project of their choice.

In eighth-grade, they have been working on their paper Mache candy bags.Students got to choose the candy they wanted to draw and paint on their bag.  Soon they will be working on enlarging a picture and drawing it on a grid.

It is November and some students who have moved here from other countries have just experienced their first snow. This is always an exciting time, as the students did not quite know what to expect. They will like the snow for a little while, but then their feelings about snow will probably change.

Some of the fourth- and fifth-grade students are working with the new ESL curriculum, Frames for Fluency.

This curriculum encourages ESL students to speak in English. The students are able to use words, pictures, and sentence frames in order to form their own thoughts and ideas. This also gives ESL students the confidence they need in order to become better writers.

Other students are working with leveled readers and practicing reading fluency. A project many fourth graders will start working on is writing a nonfiction article about a different country in the world. They will have to research the climate and lifestyle of a different country to write about.

After the holiday break, students will begin preparing for the ACCESS test. This test measures how much English the students know.
