Sioux Falls, Brookings win state amateur basketball titles

HURON — The Sioux Falls Ambush claimed the Class A title during the State Amateur Basketball Tournament on Sunday at Huron Arena with a 98-79 victory against the Aberdeen Tropics.
Griffin Callahan had 28 points to lead five players in double figures for Sioux Falls. Jordan Miller and Skyler Bloch had 22 and 21 points, respectively, while Preston Broughton had 14 points and Kelly Hubbard added 11 points.
Aberdeen was led by Kevin Ratzch with 25 points. Jared Hannigan converted on seven 3-pointers to finish with 21 points, while Taylor Newton had 10 points.

HURON — The Aberdeen Tropics earned a spot in the Class A title game with an 80-66 victory against Mitchell on Sunday at Huron Arena.
Taylor Newton scored 13 of his 21 points in the opening half to lead Aberdeen. Kevin Ratzch had 19 points, while Casey Grim added 13 points.
Tate Martin was the lone player to reach double figures for Mitchell, with 21 points. Carl Johnson had nine points, while Jesse Tolsma, Kyle Claussen, Brandon Boggs and Jordan Long all had seven points.

HURON — Sioux Falls Ambush secured its spot in the Class A title game with a 96-88 victory against Madison on Sunday.
Jordan Miller and Garrett Callahan each had 24 points to lead Sioux Falls. Griffen Callahan had 16 points, while Preston Broughton added 12 points.
Brady Wiebe led the way for Madison with 19 points. Chad White had 17 points, while Preston Nordling had 15 points.

HURON — Madison won its opening game on Saturday with a 106-93 decision against Sturgis, which was replacing Tea in the Class A bracket.
Chad White scored 26 of his game-high 35 points in the opening half for Madison. Tony Fiegen and Brady Wiebe added 21 and 20 points, respectively, while Robby Schaefer had nine points.
Christian Kappel had 24 points to lead four players in double figures for Sturgis. Tanner Weaver had 21 points, while Clem Robinson and Tyler Hohenberger added 19 and 17 points, respectively.

HURON — Adam Fritz scored the only two points during a three-minute overtime to help Brookings clinch the championship with a 109-107 victory against Watertown Foothills Contracting during the Class B State Amateur Basketball Tournament on Sunday at Huron Arena.
Brayden Carlson had 35 points to lead Brookings. Ryan Burggraff had 30 points, while Fritz finished with 21 points.
Kyle Wiesner had 32 points, including five 3-pointers for Watertown. Justin Brown and Dustin Tetzlaff had 17 and 16 points, respectively, while Justin Johnson added 11 points.

HURON — Blake Heiser converted on seven free-throw shots in the second half to help Watertown Foothills Contraction to an 82-70 victory against Lennix Plains Commerce in the semifinals.
Heiser finished with 18 points to lead Watertown, while Dustin Tetzlaff and Justin Brown added 17 and 16 points, respectively.
Doug Hanson and Matt Rand each had 17 points to lead Lennox. Matt Malloy recorded 16 points, while Jared Vlastiun had 13 points.

HURON — Brookings withstood a late rally by Huron PB Sports to secure a spot in the title game with a 103-96 victory in the semifinals on Sunday.
Brayden Carlson and Ryan Burggraff combined for 78 points for Brookings. Carlson had a game-high 42 points, including six 3-pointers and an 18-of-20 effort from the free-throw line, while Burggraff had 36 points.
Braxton Carlson also reached double figures with 11 points.
Huron was led by Joey Mitchell with 27 points, including a buzzer beater at the half. Chase Reid had 15 points, followed by Terrell Newton with 14 points, Trevor McCaskell with 13 points and Pine Lenecker with 12 points.

HURON — Brookings recorded a 94-72 victory against Mitchell Hefty Seed in the opening round on Saturday.
Brayden Carlson had 13 points in each half to finish with 26 points for Brookings. Ryan Burggraff had 24 points, all in the opening half, while Braxton Carlson and Adam Fritz had 10 and nine points, respectively.
Mitchell was led by Chris Punt with 21 points. Max Schaffer had 15 points, while Trevor Salmonson added 12 points.
