HURON — The Sioux Falls Flyers capped an 18-3 season Sunday afternoon, with a 5-3 win over the Mitchell Marlins to win the South Dakota Amateur Hockey Association’s 14U Girls’ State Hockey Title at Bergman Arena.
Sioux Falls opened the scoring three minutes into the final when Abbie Oleson scored her first goal of the game. Mitchell responded five minutes later, as Reese Amick hit the back of the nets for a tie score. But Sioux Falls got two more goals before the end of the period, as Emily Ewalt scored on a Cora Bukovich assist before Oleson chalked up her second goal for a 3-1 lead after one period and the Marlins were playing from behind the rest of the way.
Mitchell got on the board first in the second period, as Tristen Zimmer scored a power play goal off an Amick feed. But just before the end of the period, Riley VanderEsch got the goal back for Sioux Falls, with assists going to Ewalt and Jessica Stucker, for a 4-2 cushion headed to the final frame.
VanderEsch got the final Flyer goal at the 3:30 mark and although Zimmer got a goal back at the 11 minute mark of the game, the Flyer defense stiffened and Sioux Falls held on to claim the championship hardware.
Eva Ramm stopped 15-of-18 shots in the game to claim the win for the Flyers. Sadie Kludt faced 30 shots on goal for Mitchell, making 25 saves. Mitchell ends the season with a record of 10-9-1.
The Huron All-Star 14U girls rebounded from a semifinal upset to Mitchell in the semifinals, to take third place at the state tournament with an 8-2 over the Brookings Rangers Sunday.
Huron opened quickly with three first-period goals. Kylee Small opened the scoring with an unassisted goal, then assisted teammate Izabel Casper mere seconds later to put Huron up 2-0. Three minutes later, Azalea Rashaad made it 3-0 off an assist by Devin Hunter.
Brookings got on the board in the second period, but Small got the goal back before the horn, with assists going to Hunter and Casper.
To make sure there was no doubt, Hunter scored back to back goals in the first four and a half minutes of the final period - earning her the hat trick and putting the All-Stars up 6-1. It was 7-1 a minute later as Shelby Timm got in the scorebook with an unassisted goal, before Rashaad closed the scoring for Huron with an unassisted goal. Greta Bott earned an assist on Hunter’s third goal of the game.
Huron goalie Marissa Ready only faced eight shots on goal, stopping six of them to earn the win in the pipes. Huron on the other hand, put 40 shots on Brookings goalie Rorii Quam.
