Slip-slidin’ on a summer day

HURON — A slipping and sliding kick ball event with a twist, as the “teens vs tweens,” glided down plastic sheets to get to the inflatable pools used as bases, took place at Campbell Park outside the Huron Public Library on Tuesday afternoon.
“It’s an activity that we usually have as part of the Summer Reading Program, but in June it was forecasting storms, so we couldn’t do it then,” Mary Olson Tween and Teen Librarian said. “It’s simple kickball rules, they can get them out by throwing and catching. We added some hoses and water at home plate, where we can spray them. I saw a video a few years ago and thought we could make this work and that it looked like a lot of fun.”
There were approximately 18 participants who participated in the summer activity fun, with ages ranging from fourth-grade to senior high. It was an hour of fun for everyone, including a water balloon fight after the kickball, followed by a movie for everyone indoors.

The library has recently started new programs specifically for ‘tweens,’ aged between fourth- and sixth-grade. As a new part of the library, Olson said, “We do crafts, watch movies and other fun things. We just began the programs, so we are always open to new ideas.”
