Stanley W. Maakestad, 91, of Woonsocket

  WOONSOCKET — Stanley W. Maakestad, 91, of Woonsocket, passed away Monday, May 22, 2017, at the Prairie View Care Center in Woonsocket.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday May 27, at the Spirit Of Faith Church in Woonsocket. Burial will be in Eventide Cemetery with military rites by the Woonsocket American Legion Post 29. Visitation will be Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Basham funeral Home in Woonsocket and one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
Stanley was born on January 29, 1926, to Helmer and Edith (Slack) Maakestad. He grew up in Mitchell and attended Mitchell High School.  
Following high school, Stanley worked various jobs. He was united in marriage to Lila Merkle March 31, 1943. He entered the U.S. Army in 1944, and was in combat in the Battle of Po Valley. In 1948 he went to work for the REA and retired after 37 years.
He is survived by his children, Larry (Maria) Maakestad of Ft. Collins, Colo., Lynne (Roger) Syring of Overland Park, Kan., Bruce (Luci) Maakestad of Mankato, Minn., Pattie (Jim) Larson of Woonsocket, and Lori (Steven) Johnson of Elk Point; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; sister, Jean Muck; sisters-in-law, Joan Merkle, and Arlene Merkle.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lila; two sisters; and one brother.
