State adjustments push area active case numbers notably lower

HURON — A notably high number of recovered cases statewide and a reduction in the number of negative cases in the state by more than 200 pushed area active case numbers notably lower in Friday’s South Dakota Department of Health (DOH) COVID-19 numbers.

According to DOH communications director Daniel Bucheli, one of the laboratories that reports numbers to the state reported historical cases from November through April on Friday, and the state has also been doing data cleaning as part of the 2020 data closeout, so some adjustments were made to both positives and negative numbers, though they showed up more prominently in eliminating duplicate negative cases.

The state reported 257 new positive cases, three new deaths, and 367 new recovered cases. The additional recovered cases pushed the state’s active cases down to 2,201.

Current hospitalizations statewide continue to remain over 100, with Friday’s DOH numbers reporting 106 currently hospitalized due to COVID-related illness within the state.

Beadle County reported one new positive case and four new recovered cases on Friday. This brought the active cases in the county down to 34.

The Heartland Region noted 13 new positive cases across the seven-county region Friday as well as 24 new recovered cases. That lowered the active cases in the Heartland to 109.
