HURON — The four South Dakota High School Activities Association State Soccer Championships will be decided today at Tiger Stadium.
“Hosting the state soccer championships is great for the City of Huron,” said Leah Branaugh, who is the head coach for the Huron varsity boys’ soccer team. “It will hopefully build some excitement for soccer in the community and allow people from out of town to see our facilities.”
While the Tigers come up short in their effort to reach the state title game this season, Branaugh says her team will get the opportunity to watch as the championships are decided.
“The Huron junior varsity boys’ soccer team will be doing some of the ball shagging and are excited to see a high level of soccer being played on Saturday,” she said.
Class A girls
Opening the festivities will be top-seeded West Central against second-seeded Tea Area in the Class A girls’ title game at 11 a.m. The same two teams met in the previous two title games.
West Central, which is 8-2-4 won its third-straight title in 2018. Tea Area, which is 8-3-3, is the defending Class A champion and is making its fourth overall appearance in the title game.

Top-seeded Sioux Falls Christian will face second-seeded Tea Area in the Class A boys’ title game at 1 p.m. The same two teams have met for the title the previous two seasons.
Tea Area, which 7-4-2, is seeking its fourth consecutive state title after edging Sioux Falls Christian 1-0 in overtime last season. The Titans, who also won a title in 2013, is making their sixth overall appearance in the title game.
Sioux Falls Christian, which is 10-1-1, is looking to claim its first state title since 2015. The Chargers played to a 1-1 draw against O’Gorman the inaugural soccer state title game in 2012 and are making their sixth overall appearance in the championship game.

Top-seeded Rapid City Stevens will battle seventh-seeded O’Gorman in the Class AA boys’ title game at 7 p.m.

O’Gorman, which is 9-4-3, made its lone state championship appearance in 2012, when it battled to a 1-1- draw against Sioux Falls Christian in 2012. The Knights upset second-seeded Spearfish 3-2 in the quarterfinals and then edged third-seeded Watertown 2-1 in the semifinals.
