Success for HHS Speech and Debate team at recent tournaments

Posted

The Huron High School Speech and Debate Team traveled to two locations this past weekend.
Part of the team traveled to the rescheduled State Oral Interp Festival on Friday and Saturday, while the rest of the team traveled to the first Central Forensic Conference (CFC) Tournament in Harrisburg on Friday.

Huron received three Superior Ratings:
Reese Uecker in Non-Original Oratory; Nate Lyon in Humorous; and Jasmine Snow in Poetry.
Assistant Coaches Laura Iverson and Lacey Vanden Berge explained they are “proud of the work the team did to maintain their rigorous practice schedule for an extra week to stay prepared.”
At the Harrisburg CFC Tournament, Huron is currently in fifth place.

Current CFC Standings:
1- Brookings (110 points)

2- Mitchell (75)
3- SF O’Gorman (65)
4- Yankton (64)
5- Huron (63)
6- Lennox (55)
7- Harrisburg (46)
8- SF Washington (42)
9- Dakota Valley (12)

Top finishers from Huron:
In Humorous Interp, Tanner Cronin placed second and Jackson Trandall finished fourth.
In Varsity Extemp, Jacob Hotchkiss finished fifth and Nathan Maxted finished sixth.
In Novice Extemp, Nathan Farmer placed fifth.
In Novice LD Debate, Gaby Escobar placed second.
“We were really hurt by the number of students we couldn’t take to Harrisburg because of the rescheduling of State Interp. It left several events uncovered by the team. Still, we managed to stay within striking distance of our goal to finish in the top three in the conference,” head coach Mitch Gaffer said.
The State Oral Interp Festival was set to be last weekend but snow and bad road conditions caused it to be moved to this past weekend at Pierre Riggs High School.
“Overall, the team is progressing well but because of scheduling conflicts with various events, the team has yet to travel with everyone and competing at full strength,” explained Gaffer. “Hopefully, things will settle down and we can take a full team. Although not at full strength, we have a good part of the team traveling next weekend.”

The last tournament before Christmas break will be the Brookings Bell Tournament next weekend.
