Tea Area boys, Winner girls win Class A state tournament championships

SIOUX FALLS — Play wrapped up Saturday at the State Class “A” boys basketball tournament with the Tea Area Titans cutting down the nets, as they closed a 24-1 season with their second Class “A” title in three years, after defeating the Sioux Falls Christian Chargers 68-57 at the Premier Center.
The Titans used a 20-6 third quarter to transform a three-point halftime deficit into a 12-point lead heading to the final period en route to the title. Justin Hohn scored 19 points and handed out six assists while Noah Friedel scored 17 and had a game-high 12 rebounds for the Titans, who also got a dozen points from Kade Stearns and 10 from Kaleb Joffer in a balanced scoring effort.
The Chargers, who ended with a season record of 21-3, were led by Zack Witte’s 17 points. Gavin Schipper added 12 and Mitchell Oostra chipped in 11. Mitchell Goodbary contributed nine rebounds and handed out seven assists.

Third place
Pine Ridge 61, Lennox 47
The Pine Ridge Thorpes got their running game rolling early, while also clamping down on the defensive end of the floor, en route to a 61-47 win over the Lennox Orioles in the third-place game at the State Class “A” boys’ basketball tournament Saturday evening.
Halen Bad Bear led all scorers in the game with 25 points and handed out five assists, in helping the Thorpes to the win and the third-place hardware. Corey Brown scored 11 and had 13 rebounds as Pine Ridge closes the season with a record of 20-4.
Lennox, which ends the year 19-7, got 14 points from Josh Arlt and 10 from Zach Leisinger. Brock Anderson had seven rebounds and shared top assist honors with Arlt, as both Orioles had three assists.

SIOUX FALLS —The St. Thomas More Cavaliers took fifth-place at the State “A” boys’ basketball tournament with a 71-69 escape over the Dell Rapids Quarriers during the consolation championship on Saturday at the Premier Center in Sioux Falls.
An improved 20-5 record ends the season for the Cavaliers, with Ryder Kirsch leading the team at 23 points, while 13 more were tallied by each Connor Hollenbeck, Caden Casey and Ryan Wojcik en route to the win.
Dell Rapids were led by Colin Rentz with a game-high of 28 points, plus another 11 by Logan Heim and Logan Ellingson in losing efforts for the Quarriers, closing the season with a 15-9 record after the loss.

SIOUX FALLS — The Madison Bulldogs took a 70-60 win over the Hot Springs Bison during the Class “A” State boys’ basketball tournament, for seventh-place in a consolation round game on Saturday at the Sioux Falls Arena.
Keaton Nighbert led the Bulldogs with 17 points, Cody Brown had 14, while Doyle Brown totaled 11 to assist with the win, as Madison closed its season with a 16-9 record.
Kelton Harris tallied a game-high of 20 points to lead Hot Springs, Matt Norton added 16, while Thame Lockhart recorded 10 more for the team. The season ended for the Bison with a 20-6 record after the loss.

SIOUX FALLS — The Winner Warriors won their first state girls’ basketball title Saturday night, overcoming a first half deficit and holding off the West Central Trojans 60-53 in the State Class “A” girls basketball tournament championship game.
It was the first loss of the year for West Central, which finished the season 24-1, while Winner ended unblemished at 24-0.
Gabriel Kocer led the championship charge with 21 points, while Bella Swedlund added 12 and had a game-high 13 rebounds. Kalla Bertram scored 10 for the Warriors.
West Central was led by Kali Nelson’s 20 points, and Addy Kramer chipped in 11. Cassidy Siemonsma had 12 rebounds for the Trojans.

The Lennox Orioles got a basket from Rianna Fillipi with 30 seconds remaining and then watched the McCook Central-Montrose Fighting Cougars miss two short-range shots in the closing seconds to emerge with a 43-41 win in the third-place game of the State Class “A” girls basketball tournament Saturday afternoon.
Lennox, which ended the season with a record of 21-4, was led by Madysen Vlastuin’s 17 points and eight rebounds, while Riley Peters chipped in 11.
McCook Central-Montrose got 16 points from Ashtyn Wobig, while Abigail Van Ruler led all rebounders with 10 boards. the Fighting Cougars finished 19-6.

The Mt. Vernon-Plankinton Titans trailed by one after three quarters, but clamped down on the defensive end in the final period to take a 53-50 win over the Aberdeen Roncalli Cavaliers in the fifth-place game of the State Class “A” girls’ basketball tournament Saturday afternoon.
Mikaela Cassidy scored 15 points, Emilee Fox added 14 and Katlyn Briggs had a game-high 10 rebounds for the Titans, who end the season with a record of 18-8.
For the Cavaliers, who end 17-7, Jamie Ewart scored 16 points, Mariah Winegar scored 15 and had eight rebounds and Megan Streier added 15 points.

The Todd County Lady Falcons trailed early, but took the lead in the second quarter and were never headed Saturday, salvaging seventh place at the State Class “A” girls’ basketball tournament with a 63-51 win over the St. Thomas More Cavaliers.
Todd County, now 23-3, was led by Kelsie Herman’s 21 points. Alanis Murray added 13 and Raven Cournoyer chipped in 11. Haylee Quick Bear had 10 rebounds for the Lady Falcons.
The Cavaliers end the season 19-7. They were led by Haleigh Timmer’s 27 points and eight rebounds.
