Teams advance in 281 Conference girls' tournament

Wolsey-Wessington 49, Sunshine Bible Academy 3
WOLSEY – The Wolsey-Wessington Lady Warbirds jumped out with 21 first quarter points, and they coasted to a 49-3 victory over the Sunshine Bible Academy Crusaders in opening round action of the girls’ 281 Conference tournament Monday in Wolsey.

Mya Boomsma scored 10 of her game-high 14 points in the first quarter for the Lady Warbirds, who move to 6-4. Taylor Horn added eight points.

Alyssa Hiles and Faith Nelson led the Lady Warbirds with five rebounds apiece while Lainey Uttecht nabbed eight steals in the game.

SBA falls to 0-8 on the season. Becca Hofman scored two points and Aja Paul grabbed six rebounds to lead the Crusaders.

The Lady Warbirds will face off with James Valley Christian in the semifinals today in Wolsey while the Crusaders will play Hitchcock-Tulare in the consolation semifinals at the JVC gym today.

WOLSEY – The James Valley Christian Lady Vikings held a slim four-point lead over the Hitchcock-Tulare Lady Patriots after one quarter, but that lead would expand at the end of every period, finishing with a 55-33 victory in the opening round of the 281 Conference girls’ basketball tournament Monday in Wolsey.

Alexa Goertz found a number of holes in the Lady Patriot defense on the way to 19 points for JVC, who moves to 4-4 on the year. Kaylie Robinson added in 14 points.

Karilyn Wieting grabbed six rebounds to pace the Lady Vikings.

Eighth-grader Cambree Hoekman and senior Madison Hofer each scored 11 points to lead Hitchcock-Tulare.

The Lady Patriots (3-5) were led in rebounding by Isabel Gilbert with six.

The Lady Vikings will meet Wolsey-Wessington in the semifinals today in Wolsey while the Lady Patriots take on Sunshine Bible Academy in the consolation semifinals at the JVC gym today.

WOLSEY – The Sanborn Central/Woonsocket Blackhawks jumped out to a 22-2 opening quarter lead and just kept the foot on the gas pedal, coming away with a 61-15 victory over the Iroquois/Doland Lady Chiefs in the opening round of the 281 Conference girls’ basketball tourney Monday in Wolsey.

Trista White led the Blackhawks with 16 points. Eighth-grader Liz Boschee added 15 points and seven rebounds off the bench for SC/W, who moves to 7-3 with the victory.

The Lady Chiefs (2-7) were led by Katie Dubro with seven points.

The Blackhawks move onto the semifinals today in Wolsey while the Lady Chiefs will be playing at the JVC gym today in the consolation semifinals.

Wessington Springs 45, Highmore-Harrold 43
WOLSEY – After three blowout games, the final game of the opening round of the 281 Conference girls’ basketball tournament brought plenty of excitement as the Highmore-Harrold Pirates and Wessington Springs Spartans engaged in a back-and-forth affair that wasn’t decided until an Avery Orth block on the final shot sealed a Spartan 45-43 victory.

The Spartans move to 4-6 behind a big game from Orth, who scored 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Kirstie Munsen added 15 points and nine rebounds.

The Pirates fall to 5-4 despite 21 points from Courtney Moser. Maddie Knox scored nine points and grabbed 15 rebounds on the night for Highmore-Harrold.

Wessington Springs will play Sanborn Central/Woonsocket today in the semifinals in Wolsey while the Pirates will face Iroquois/Doland in the consolation semifinals at the JVC gym.
