The Daily DEX 2-5

A conversation with the Blaine and Paullyn Carey family

What did the Beef Complex mean to you?
Our family and our kids have grown up in the Beef Complex.  We moved to Huron in 2001 and right away, the Beef Complex became part of our life for our kids and us.

The amount of time we spent in there during the Si Tanka College Rodeo days is priceless.  We also spent a lot of time in there with goat tying clinics, roping clinics, barrel races, rodeos, and team ropings.

Our time with Beadle County 4-H started in the Beef Complex with horse camps, horse shows, and horse safety instruction. The Beef Complex has been a mainstay for events in the equine industry for all these years.  It has also allowed the youth from Beadle County and across the state to participate at an indoor facility, which has been amazing.

What does building a new complex mean to you or for others?
The new DEX means opportunity for our family, the community, and the surrounding area and the state of South Dakota.  This new building can accommodate old and new events, including national events for equine and livestock.

It could also be used for concerts, displays, dog shows, auto events - the opportunities are endless.
We have hosted the National High School Junior High Finals Rodeo, the second largest rodeo in the world.  We can now do that again and have it indoors; that’s a big thing.  And now with the new DEX it provides a venue for year-round events that can happen to keep our community on the forefront as a place to come!

Why are you excited for the DEX: Dakota Events Complex?
Our family can’t wait for the DEX to be built.  There are so many ideas that can be realized; from this tragedy of a fire to a new hope for our area.

The size of the building will help bring different and new events year-round and our family will help to promote those new ideas and events that can take place in the DEX. Rodeo, equine, livestock and other industries can all look forward to use of the building in the future.

The ‘Daily DEX’ is a 10-day series focusing on memories of the South Dakota State Fair Beef Complex and looking forward to the future.
