Tiger Cheer and Dance competes at Kernel Invite

Matt Gade/Mitchell Daily Republic Huron’s Hip Hop Dance Team competes at Saturday’s Mitchell Kernel Invitational Cheer and Dance competition at the Corn Palace.

MITCHELL — The Brandon Valley Lynx won the Cheer portion and the Yankton Gazelle’s ended up on top of the Dance competition at the Mitchell Kernel Cheer and Dance Invitational, held on Saturday.

Brandon Valley rolled up 255 points in the Cheer competition, to outdistance runner-up Mitchell’s 221 point total. Dell Rapids St. Mary was third with 198.

In the Dance division, Yankton rolled to wins in the Jazz and Pom divisions en route to the overall championship.

The Gazelles outpointed Aberdeen Central 279 to 243.5 in Jazz and edged Pierre 258.5 to 246 in Pom. Mitchell finished on top of the Hip Hop division, scoring 251 points to 242 for the runner-up Huron Tigers. Huron was fourth in Pom and finished fifth overall in the final team standings, a half point behind Pierre and less than three points behind third-place Aberdeen Central.

Next up for the Tigers is the Eastern South Dakota Cheer and Dance competition, Thursday in Watertown.
