HURON — The Pierre Governors showed Thursday night why they are one of the top wrestling teams in the Class A ranks, winning 11 of the 14 matches and rolling to a 62-11 win over the Huron Tigers in an ESD dual at Tiger Arena.
The Governors benefitted from a pair of forfeit wins, and added seven more wins by pin and a technical fall as well.
Huron’s first win of the night came from Moses Gross at 120 pound, as the Tiger grappler consistently earned take-downs, but was never able to get Nate Williams in a pinning combination, and took a 12-3 major decision.
At 160 pounds, in the most exciting match of the night, Huron’s Lucas Hofer trailed for much of a tough match with Jayden Wiebe of Pierre. Hofer found himself down 5-3 as the clock wound past the 30 second mark in the match and managed to execute a quick and decisive reversal, to tie the match, and then quickly moved into a pinning combination, but time ran out before the referee slapped the mat and Hofer settled for three back points and the 8-5 decision.
At 182 pounds, Tyson Lien owned Gavin Stotts of Pierre, piling up take downs and back points in a match that Lien won by major decision, 18-5.
The Tigers are back in action on Thursday night, when they travel to Aberdeen to take on the Golden Eagles. Huron’s dual match against Harrisburg, which was postponed Thursday night, has been added to the Tigers’ trip to Watertown on Feb. 4, where Huron will wrestle both teams.
