HURON — The Huron boys’ soccer team opened the season with a victory against the team that knocked them out of the postseason a year ago.

Using three goals from junior Ronaldo Pineda, the Tigers blanked Brandon Valley 3-0 on Friday at Tiger Stadium.

“It was a great way to open the season for the Huron boys,” head coach Leah Branaugh said. “We have a mixed team of experienced players and some with little or no varsity experience. I was happy with the way the new players stepped up today and the veteran players led the younger boys.”

The Tigers scored a pair of goals late in the opening half to build a 2-0 advantage.

Pineda opened the scoring with a goal on a free kick during the 33rd minute. He also found the net on a free kick with just two second remaining in the first half.

“The boys did a great job of keeping possession of the ball and playing physically against a much larger Brandon Valley team,” Branaugh said. “We were able to take advantage of some free kicks and penalty kicks to put some goals in.”

Pineda then earned the hat trick for the Tigers with his third goal during the 52nd.

Micah Larson recorded the shutout in the net for Huron, stopping the two shots he faced from the Lynx.

“Ronaldo led us with a hat trick today,” Branaugh said. “Our defense did a great job in helping Micah Larson with a shutout in goal, as well.”

In the junior varsity game, Brandon Valley escaped with a 3-2 victory.

Matthew Thin and Elder Morales had the goals for the Tigers, while Eh Ja Beh Win inked three saves.

Huron returns to action Friday, when it hosts Spearfish in a 6 p.m., game at Tiger Stadium.
