Tigers record sweep against RC Stevens

HURON — With wins being a premium at this point in the season, the Huron volleyball team picked up another solid victory on Saturday at Huron Arena.

The Tigers used set scores of 25-10, 25-14 and 25-13 to sweep Rapid City Stevens. The victory came just hours after they inked a sweep against Rapid City Central.

“When you are being successful you want to keep playing,” Huron coach Josh Lien said after his team earned its third consecutive win to improved to 11-9. “We weren’t worried last night about that short turn around and we really came and played pretty well.”

The Tigers were hitting on all cylinders on Saturday and it was wreaking havoc for the Raiders, who suffered their fourth straight loss and are now 13-15.

“The film shows Stevens better than they were,” Lien said. “But when you do that to a team — serving and hitting that aggressive as we were — that is going to have a team out of completely system all night and that was the case tonight.”

Huron finished Saturday’s match with a hitting percentage of .337 and it spelled trouble for Stevens.

“It’s like a batting average for volleyball,” Lien said. “It means they are scoring when they are swinging, so that’s a big deal. You are going to win a lot of volleyball matches when you are playing that well.”

Brynn Gose led the attack for the Tigers, finishing with 13 kills on 26 hits. Emily Dale had seven kills on 12 swings, while Karsyn Kopfmann had six kills on 13 attacks and Reese Rozell had five kills.

“Coaches are going to take those numbers every single day, especially on Saturday,” Lien said. “We did a good job offensively on our side of the net.

“Defensively, we took their middles out of it,” he said. “That was the game plan, and the girls executive it to perfection today.”

Hamtyn Heinz finished with 75 assists for Huron, while Gose was 15 of 16 serving with four aces. Bryn Huber was 11 of 13 serving with three aces and had a team-high 27 digs.

Rozell and Gose had 11 and nine digs, respectively, while Kopfmann and Dale each had a block kill.

The Tigers, who are currently eighth in seed points, will next battle Mitchell at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Huron Arena. The Kernels, who are also 11-9, are 10th in seed points and will be looking to gain ground on Huron, with the top eight teams hosting games in the SoDak 16 playoffs.

Tuesday’s match will also being the Breast Cancer Awareness match, so fans are encouraged to wear their pink shirts to the match.
