Tigers split in pair of matches

HURON — For the second time in two days, the Huron Tiger tennis team earned a split in a triangular at Huron High School Courts, downing Rapid City Central’s Cobblers, but falling to the Mitchell Kernels.
After defeating Rapid City Central 8-1 on Wednesday, the Tigers shut out the Cobblers 9-0 on Thursday.
Blake Meyer defeated Charlie Perry 10-5 at No. 1 singles, avenging the lone loss that Huron had suffered in the previous matchup. Henry Rubish (No. 2), Landon Claeys at No. 4 singles and No. 5 Brenden Schlader all recorded 10-0 wins Thursday, while Tyler Sterret earned a 10-4 win at No. 3 and Reese Uecker at No. 6 won 10-6.
All three doubles matches went Huron’s way, by identical 10-2 scores.
“I thought that Tyler and Blake came out a lot more aggressively in their doubles match against RCC,” said Tiger coach Tim Hedblom. “Actually, I think all three doubles teams played a more aggressive game, which was a goal today. All six singles flights played better today as well.”
Huron didn’t fare as well against their ESD foe, falling 7-2 to the Kernels, who are favorites in the conference race this season.
Claeys won his singles match 10-6 and teamed with Rubish to take the No. 2 doubles match by the same score. All of the other matches fell to Mitchell by wide margins, except the No. 5 singles match, where Schlader lost his match 11-9 in extra play.
“I felt we were very competitive in all the singles and doubles,” Hedblom said.  “Landon picked up a big win to improve his conference record to 4-0.  He teamed up with Henry Rubish to win at Flight 2 doubles.  With that win they improve to 3-1 in the conference.  Brenden played really well against Mitchell but came up short. It is important that we continue to improve and limit the unforced errors.”
The Tiger JV team will travel to Mitchell on Monday and the varsity will be on the road on Tuesday, traveling to Aberdeen to tangle with Aberdeen Roncalli.
“It is important that we continue to improve and limit the unforced errors,” Hedblom said.
