Tigers win four at Class A state tourney

RAPID CITY — Four of the six Huron wrestlers recorded wins during the opening round of the Class A State Tournament on Friday at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.

Winning matches for the Tigers were Lucas Hofer at 160, Tyson Lien at 182, Tristan Cardona at 220 and Sebastian Cardona at 285.

Hofer opened the tournament with a 4-0 decision against Garret Ristau of Chamberlain. He will face Mac Young of Watertown in the quarterfinals today.

Lien, who is a defending state champion for the Tigers, recorded an 18-2 technical fall at 3:11 in his 182-pound match against Preston Eimers of Tea Area. He will face Tyler Rudebusch of Watertown in the quarterfinals today.

Tristan Cardona inked a 10-5 win for Huron against James Olson of Brookings. He will now face second-seeded Owen Warren of Brandon Valley, who has just three losses this season, in the quarterfinals.

Sebastian Cardona needed just 1 minute and 1 second to stop his opening match for the Tigers against Buck Fickbohm of Sturgis by pin. He will face Zach Brady of Vermillion in the quarterfinals today.

A 5-4 win in an ultimate tiebreaker moved Brandon Sparks of Mitchell past Moses Gross of Huron in the opening round at 120.

Gross will now face Connor Peterson of Vermillion in a consolation match today.

Robby Edberg of West Central pinned Kaiser Ruth of Huron in 1:03 during their opening match at 145. Ruth will face Nate Sprenkle of O’Gorman in a consolation match today.

Brandon Valley and Watertown shared the top spot in Class A with 35 points each, while Rapid City Stevens was third at 31.

The quarterfinals and the first-round consolation matches will be held at 10 a.m., today, while the semifinals are slated for 3:30 p.m.

In the Class A State Dual Tournament on Thursday, Brandon Valley defeated Tea Area 61-14; Pierre defeated Mitchell 38-19; Rapid City Stevens defeated Chamberlain 51-20; and Harrisburg defeated Watertown 39-28 in the opening round.

In the semifinals, Brandon Valley and Pierre tied 34-34, but Pierre advanced on a tiebreaker, and Rapid City Stevens defeated Harrisburg 39-28.

Pierre will meet Rapid City Stevens for the Dual Tournament title today, while Brandon Valley and Harrisburg will meet for third place.
