Top seeds win in 281 Conference boys’ tourney

WOLSEY — The boys’ teams took the court on Saturday in the opening round of the 281 Conference Tournament at the Wolsey-Wessington gym.
Semifinal and final round games will take place at Huron Arena on Tuesday, Jan. 16, and Thursday, Jan. 18.

Here is a look at the four first-round games from Saturday.

Highmore-Harrold 68, Wessington Springs 37
The Highmore-Harrold Pirates sprinted to a 47-13 advantage over the second and third quarters of play, breaking open a one-point game and pulling away for a 68-37 win over the Wessington Springs Spartans in an opening round game at the 281 Conference boys’ basketball tournament.
H-H held a 13-12 lead after one quarter, but outscored the Spartans 26-6 in the second quarter, then continued to build the lead.
Jharret Bloomenrader scored 26 points and Dylan McDonnel added 23 to lead the Pirates, who move to 4-5 with the win. Darian Schmidt added 12 for Highmore-Harrold, who will play Wolsey-Wessington in the championship semifinals Tuesday at Huron Arena.
Wessington Springs was led by Jacob Messmer’s 12 points, while Trance Schooler led the team with six rebounds. The Spartans will play Iroquois in the consolation semifinals Tuesday afternoon, also at Huron Arena.

Wolsey-Wessington 65, Iroquois 51

The Woley-Wessington Warbirds earned a 65-51 victory over the Iroquois Chiefs in boys’ basketball at the 281 conference.
Wolsey-Wessington’s season record is now improved to 6-2, while the Iroquois Chiefs record dropped to 1-6.
Lynden Williams had the highest amount of points for the Warbirds, reaching 24. He also was the rebounds leader with eight. Mark Hamilton followed with 11 points, while Tyler Babcock added seven more.
The Chiefs were led by Jacob Bich with 14 points, while Caleb Waldner also reached double figures with 12 points. Brandon Decker had eight rebounds as well as eight points for Iroquois.

The Sanborn Central-Woonsocket Blackhawks dominated a game against the Sunshine Bible Academy Crusaders, with a 72-42 victory in 281 boys’ basketball action.
The Blackhawks, now 7-2 on the season, had three players in the double figures. Noah Dickson led the team with 15 points and 10 rebounds, Jared Goldammer followed with 12, while Trent Kingsbury added 10 more.
Jade Burma led the Crusaders with 18 points and 12 rebounds, while Ross Engle followed with 13 points.

Three players finished with double figures en route to a 68-43 victory for the James Valley Christian Vikings over the Hitchcock-Tulare Patriots in boys’ basketball.
Josh Wieting worked his way up to 21 points to lead the team, while Ryan Wager had 15 points. Michael Waldner followed with 10 points, while Darrian Hood added 9 plus 10 rebounds.
Zach Binger led the Patriots with 11 points. Cailab Wanner had nine points, while Grant Hamilton added six more.
More 281 conference basketball action will continue on Tuesday in Huron.
