Top seeds win openers during 2023 281 Conference tournament

Wolsey-Wessington 61, Sunshine Bible Academy 18
WOLSEY – The top-seeded Wolsey-Wessington Warbirds cruised to a 61-18 victory over the Sunshine Bible Academy Crusaders in the opening game of the boys’ 281 Conference Tournament Saturday in Wolsey.

Blaze Herdman led the way with 14 points for the Warbirds, who move to 6-0. Ricky Maurovic added 12 points.

Caleb Richmond secured six rebounds for the Warbirds.

Nolan Triebwasser led SBA (0-5) with seven points. Anthony Mitchell and Jensen Wipf each grabbed four rebounds to pace the Crusaders

The Warbirds move on to the semifinals Tuesday against Hitchcock-Tulare at the JVC gym. The Crusaders will face Wessington Springs in the consolation round in Wolsey Tuesday.

WOLSEY – After a slow start, the Hitchcock-Tulare Patriots took control of the game in the second quarter and sank free throws in the fourth quarter to seal a 62-53 victory in the first round of the 281 Conference Tournament Saturday in Wolsey.

Carter Binger led a quartet of Patriots in double-figure scoring with 15 points and also grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.

Jackson Maynard came off the bench to bucket 14 points for Hitchcock-Tulare, Riley Fliehe added 11, and Erik Salmen put in 10 for the Patriots.

The Spartans were led by freshman Parker Graff with a game-high 20 points, 16 of which came in the first half. Ryder Michalek added 18 points.

Graff and Brock Krueger each grabbed four rebounds to pace Wessington Springs.

James Valley Christian 67, Sanborn Central/Woonsocket 40
WOLSEY – The James Valley Christian Vikings pulled away in the second half to defeat the Sanborn Central/Woonsocket Blackhawks Saturday 67-40 in opening round action of the boys’ 281 Conference Tournament in Wolsey.

Jarrad Wallman came off the bench to lead four Vikings in double figures with 17 points and grab five rebounds. Landon Wallman pitched in 15 points while Dax Frandsen and Landon Wager each scored 11 for JVC, who moves to 4-2.

The Blackhawks (2-4) were led by Jeff Boschee with 14 points and seven rebounds.

The Vikings will play Highmore-Harrold in semifinal action Tuesday at the JVC gym. The Blackhawks will be back in Wolsey in the consolation round, facing Iroquois/Lake Preston.

WOLSEY – The final game of the opening round of the boys’ 281 Conference Tournament Saturday in Wolsey became a defensive battle, with the Highmore-Harrold Pirates escaping with a 43-40 victory over the Iroquois/Lake Preston Sharks.

The Pirates were led by Carson Stephenson with 12 points. Trey Knox grabbed 11 rebounds for Highmore-Harrold, who moves to 8-1.

Logan Peskey and Haydon Shurson each scored 16 points to lead the Sharks, who fall to 5-3. Peskey grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds.
