Top seeds win openers in 281 Conference Tournament

WOLSEY - The Hitchcock-Tulare Patriots had to survive a comeback attempt in the fourth quarter by the Sanborn Central/Woonsocket Blackhawks, but emerged victorious 64-54 in the opening game of the boys’ 281 Conference tournament.

Hitchcock-Tulare moves to 4-3 behind a balanced scoring attack that put four players in double figures.
Jackson Maynard led the Patriots with 17 points, Kyle Hamilton put in 13 points, and Erik Salmen and TJ Salmen each added 11 points.

TJ Salmen led the Patriots with nine rebounds while Jack Boomsma dished out six assists.

The Blackhawks fell to 1-8 despite Tryce Slykhuis’ 24 points. Brady Larson added nine points and led SCW with eight rebounds.

The Patriots will face top-seeded Wolsey-Wessington in Wolsey Tuesday in the semifinals while the Blackhawks will play Sunshine Bible at the JVC gym Tuesday in the consolation semifinals.

Wessington Springs 73, Iroquois/Doland 52
WOLSEY - An explosive second half allowed the Wessington Springs Spartans to fend off the upset-minded Iroquois/Doland Chiefs 73-52 Saturday in the 281 Conference tournament opening round game.

Mason Schelske scored 28 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Spartans to 6-4. Cade Mohling added 26 points, including eight 3-point baskets - six of them in the second half.

The Chiefs fell to 0-8 despite a balanced effort led by Diego Prieto’s 14 points. Logan Peskey added 13 points, Tristan Dykstra added 12 points, and Haydon Shurson pitched in 10 points for Iroquois/Doland.

Peskey and Dykstra each grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Chiefs.

The Spartans will face James Valley Christian Tuesday at Wolsey in the semifinals of the tournament.

Iroquois/Doland squares off with Highmore/Harrold Tuesday at the JVC gym in the consolation semifinals.

WOLSEY - The James Valley Christian Vikings used a big second quarter to create distance and defeat the Highmore-Harrold Pirates in the quarterfinals of the 281 Conference tourney on Saturday in Wolsey.

The Vikings moved to 3-4 behind Landon Wallman’s 16 points. Landon Wager added 14 points and Dax Frandsen pitched in 10 points off the bench.

Landon Wallman and Jerrad Wallman led the Vikings with nine rebounds.

Peyton McDonnell and Trake Cowen each scored eight points to lead the Pirates (3-5). Trey Knox grabbed six rebounds to pace Highmore-Harrold.

The Vikings will battle Wessington Springs Tuesday in Wolsey in the semifinals of the 281 Conference tournament. The Pirates tangle with Iroquois/Doland in the consolation semifinals at the JVC gym Tuesday.

WOLSEY - The top-seeded Wolsey-Wessington Warbirds opened the 281 Conference Tournament with a resounding 68-14 victory over the Sunshine Bible Academy Crusaders in Wolsey on Saturday.

The Warbirds move to 6-2 behind 12 points and five rebounds from Payson Gohn. Jemetrius Scott added 11 points.

Blaze Herdman dropped in 10 points and dished out five assists for the Warbirds. Tate French also grabbed five rebounds.

The Crusaders fall to 0-5. Daniel Gerbracht led SBA with six points and five rebounds.

The Warbirds move on to face Hitchcock-Tulare in the semifinals Tuesday in Wolsey while the Crusaders will play Sanborn Central/Woonsocket Tuesday in the consolation semifinals at the JVC gym.
