HURON — In a rematch of an early-season hard-fought match, the Faulkton Area Trojans once again emerged victorious over the Hitchcock-Tulare Lady Patriots in consolation action on Friday afternoon State “B” Volleyball Tournament action at the Huron Arena.
The Trojans defeated the Lady Patriots by scores of 25-18, 25-16, and 25-20.
Faulkton came out quick in the first set, but Hitchcock-Tulare fought back to take their first lead at 10-9. The two teams battled back and forth until they reached 15-15, at which point the Trojans exploded on a 7-0 run to take control of the set. Faulkton Area took the first set 25-18.
The Trojans came out of the gate strong in the second set, and every time the Lady Patriots would get close, Faulkton Area would go on another run. The Trojans closed out the second set at 25-16.
The Lady Patriots came out with an early lead in the third set, but the balanced hitting attack of Faulkton Area brought them quickly back into the set, pounding the ball into the strong blocking of the Lady Patriots.
Hitchcock-Tulare called a timeout after the Trojans had built a 14-10 lead in the third set, and while the Lady Patriots were able to get a quick point on a kill from Katelyn Schroeder, the Trojans took control immediately back, pushing the score to 18-11 before Coach Jordan Opp called his final timeout for the Lady Patriots.
While they had come out of timeouts with points throughout the match, the Lady Patriots failed to convert after this timeout, and the Trojans withstood one last Hitchcock-Tulare run before they closed out the match with a 25-20 victory in the third set.
Faulkton Area was led on the match by Isabel Aesoph with 20 kills and 23 assists to pace the team. She also recorded 23 digs on the match.
Peyton Melius recorded 15 hits and led the Trojans with 25 digs while Taylor Machtemes had 12 kills and led the team with four blocks.
Morgan Gutenkauf recorded 16 assists and 10 digs for Faulkton Area, and Ally Cunningham tallied 21 digs.
The Trojans move to 19-6 and will face Bridgewater-Emery for the consolation championship today at 2:00 p.m.
Hitchcock-Tulare falls to 18-6 with the loss. Ashley Masat led the Lady Patriot attack with seven kills and also led the team with three blocks.
Katelyn Schroeder had 34 digs to pace the HItchcock-Tulare defense while Kenidee Enander orchestrated the offense with 23 assists while also adding 13 digs.
The Lady Patriots will battle Corsica-Stickney for 7th place at noon today.
