HURON – Two Huron men died when their car left the roadway, went through the ditch and ended up in a city wastewater lagoon on the east side of town, law enforcement authorities said.
They are identified as Mauricio Lopez-Morales, 29, and Francisco Artemio Lopez-Ramos, 23.
They had been listed as missing on Sunday and were last seen at 9:30 p.m. Saturday.
Police Chief Kevin Van Diepen said the police department received a call Monday about what appeared to have been a motor vehicle accident with damage to a fence at one of the lagoons.
Authorities located a body in the lagoon and members of the Beadle County Dive Team were called in by Fire Chief Ron Hines.
The team located a car submersed in the water. A Lincoln Auto wrecker was called to remove the car, and during that operation a second body was recovered.
The Beadle County coroner assisted with the bodies until they could be identified by family members.
It appears as though the car left Fourth Street Southeast and Custer Avenue Southeast, a “T” intersection. It went through the ditch and a fence to the lagoon property and then into the lagoon.
It appears that speed and alcohol may have been factors in the crash. At this time, it appears to have been a one-vehicle crash.
The vehicle recovered was a blue 2009 Toyota Corolla with Iowa license plates.
Assisting with the investigation, which is ongoing, are the Huron Fire Department, Beadle County Dive Team, Beadle County Sheriff’s Office, Beadle County coroner and the Huron Police Department.
