WESSINGTON SPRINGS — Vernon Dennis Schimke, 77, of Wessington Springs, passed away Wednesday October 31, 2018, at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Monday November 5, at the Foothills Bible Fellowship Church in Wessington Springs. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Church with a 4 p.m. prayer service.
Vernon was born September 10, 1941, to Walter and Adella (Vogel) Schimke. He graduated from Wessington Springs High School in 1959, and received a teaching certificate from Northern State College. He was united in marriage to Delores Keleher May 25, 1966. He taught at Hand County rural schools and Wagner, and was employed by Jerauld County Farmers Union Co-op Gas Station for over thirty years. He was a member of the United Church of Christ and sang with the Harmony Men’s Choir.
He is survived by his wife; daughters, Laura Ross of Mpls., Minn., Linda Nissen of Omaha Neb., and Lynette (Tony) Mitzel of West Point, Neb.; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; siblings, Virginia (Jack) Van Eck of Lake Wilson, Minn., and Verlyn (Renee) Schimke of Wessington Springs; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded by his parents; and a son, Jeffrey Ross.
