Voters elect city commissioner; school board members

HURON — Voting turnout was light in the joint Huron City Commission/Huron School Board election Tuesday.

In the Huron School Board election, incumbents Kristi  Glanzer and Tim Van Berkum were re-elected for three-year terms, while Drew Weinreis earned a close victory in the race for an open seat on the Huron City Commission.

Glanzer, who was appointed to the school board last fall, to fill the unexpired term of David Wheeler, garnered 770 votes in the race, while Van Berkum was second with 596 votes and challenger Rex Sawvell was third with 479 votes.

In the City Commission race, to fill the seat being vacated by Doug Kludt, who chose not to run again. Weinreis garnered 376 of the 959 votes cast in the city race, narrowly edging challenger Sarah Rogers, who had 356 votes.

Challenger Bridget Carr ran third with 227 votes.

A total of 1,069 votes were cast in the election. The city has 6,961 registered voters, meaning that turnout for the city commission race was just under 14%.

The Huron School District has 8,714 voters, so with 1,069 votes cast, voter turnout for the school board race was just over 12%.

Vote totals are unofficial until the respective entities canvass the vote. For the city race, that will be at next Monday’s City Commission meeting, while the school board election will be canvassed at its next meeting, on April 26.

The successful candidates will be sworn in to their respective offices at the first July meeting of their boards.
