Walk for water success inspires hope

HURON — The Global 6K Walk for Water took place Saturday morning at Ravine Lake, where locals gathered to raise money and awareness in support of people living without clean water in underdeveloped countries.
“My goal was to get 30 people to come out, we had a total of 45, so I’m very happy with that,” said organizer Deb VanOverschelde.
Annually the World Vision 6K walk takes place across the U.S., with the common goal to provide these communities with safe drinking water.

“This leaves a big opportunity to the outside communities also,” VanOverschelde explained. “We are discussing how we can build the event to have more people come and be involved. It’s a great thing to do in the community, plus schools and students could become involved. It’s a great thing to do as a mission.”
With the hopes of making this an annual event, the First Presbyterian Church members in Huron, who hosted the 6K walk, are working to find ways to spark a bigger interest not only in here in town but also ways to expand in other communities across the state.
“The walk is a big event across the U.S., but South Dakota only has three walks right now, so we really want to expand on that,” VanOverschelde said. “I’m excited that we had as good of a turn out as we did, and thankful to everyone who participated.”
