Warbirds, Spartans to play for 281 Conference boys' title

WOLSEY – The top-seeded Wolsey-Wessington Warbirds earned a championship game berth with a 69-33 victory over the Hitchcock-Tulare Patriots in 281 Conference boys’ basketball tournament action in Wolsey Tuesday.

Blaze Herdman led the way for the Warbirds with 24 points, including five three-point baskets. Payson Gohn added 14 points, Carson Zomer netted 13 points, and Tate French bucketed 11 points and also led the team with six rebounds.

The Patriots were led by TJ Salmen with 12 points. Jack Boomsma grabbed four rebounds and dished out three assists to lead Hitchcock-Tulare, who falls to 4-4.

Thursday, the Warbirds will challenge Wessington Springs for the 281 Conference title at the Huron Arena, while the Patriots will square off against James Valley Christian for third place.

WOLSEY - The Wessington Springs Spartans held a 14-point halftime lead and survived a furious comeback by the James Valley Christian Vikings in the second half to earn a spot in the 281 Conference tournament championship game with a 48-45 victory Tuesday in Wolsey.

The Spartans were led by Mason Schelske with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Blake Larson and Brock Krueger each added 10 points for Wessington Springs, who move to 7-4 on the year.

The Vikings fall to 3-5. Landon Wager led the way for JVC with 14 points, 12 of which came in the second half. Landon Wallman grabbed six rebounds.

The Spartans will face off with Wolsey-Wessington for the championship Thursday night at the Huron Arena while the Vikings will meet Hitchcock-Tulare for third place.

HURON — The Sanborn Central/Woonsocket Blackhawks held the Sunshine Bible Academy Crusaders scoreless in the third quarter Tuesday afternoon, as they took a 50-18 win in a consolation semifinal game in the 281 Conference boys basketball tournament, in a game played at the JVC gymnasium.

Tryce Slykhuis scored 15 points and Toby Kneed added 12 to pace the Blackhawks, now 2-8, to the win. Brady Larson, Bryce Larson and Noah Wormstadt shared rebounding honors for SC/W, with seven boards each.

SBA, which falls to 0-6 on the season, got 10 points from Nolan Triebwasser and seven rebounds from Daniel Gerbracht.

SC/W will play Highmore-Harrold in the consolation championship game on Thursday at Huron Arena, while SBA will battle Iroquois/Doland for seventh place in the tournament on Thursday morning, also at Huron Arena.

The Highmore-Harrold Pirates will play for fifth place in the boys’ bracket of the 281 Conference tournament on Thursday, on the strength of a 64-36 defeat of the Iroquois/Doland Chiefs in a consolation semifinal game Tuesday night.

Peyton McDonnell scored 15 points, Trake Cowan added 13 and snagged 11 rebounds and Trey Knox scored 11 as the Pirates improve to 4-5 and will play Sanborn Central/Woonsocket for fifth place on Thursday at Huron Arena.

The Chiefs, who remain winless at 0-9, were led by Diego Prieto’s 13 points, while both Logan Peskey had 12 and Tristan Dykstra chipped in 10.

The Chiefs will seek to take seventh place in the tournament, when they face Sunshine Bible Academy Thursday morning at Huron Arena.
