Warriors, Cavaliers claim state titles


Castlewood 47, Hanson 41
The Castlewood Warriors claimed first place in the Girls’ Basketball Class “B” State Tournament after a 47-41 win over the Hanson Beaverettes Saturday in Aberdeen.
Castlewood had the upper hand from the start, but the lead was passed bck and forth eight times throughout the game as the teams battled it out. The Warrior’s largest lead was by six points in the second period, while the Beaverette’s were up by two also in the second.
Alayna Benike led the Warriors with 22 points to lead all players, followed by Regan Benike with 17, while Darah DeKam led the rebounders with 12.
Brooke Slaba led the Beaverettes with 11 points, while Jada Campbell followed with nine points and 11 rebounds.

Tripp-Delmont/Armour 57, Ethan 46
The Tripp-Delmont/Armour Nighthawks took a 57-46 win over the Ethan Rustlers, to claim third place at the Class “B” Girls’ Basketball State Tournament, Saturday in Aberdeen.
The Rustlers had their biggest lead of seven in the first quarter, which ended five a five point lead to Ethan, then the Nighthawks took over the game. The lead was passed back and fourth five times, but the Nighthawks led by 15 points in the fourth before they escaped with the win.
Mattilynn Reiner led the Nighthawks with 16 points and eight rebounds, Erica Koster tallied 14 points, while Brooklyn Brouwer added 11.
Karly Gustafson led the Rustlers with a game-high of 34 points and led the rebiounders with 12, while Cameryn Logan followed with six more.

Fifth place
Warner 54, Sully Buttes 44
The Warner Monarchs finished fifth place in the girls’ basketball Class “B” State Tournament, after a 54-44 victory over the Sully Buttes Chargers, Saturday afternoon in Aberdeen.
The Chargers ended the first period wuth the upper hand, but fell behind in the second and were unable to recover as the Monarchs claimed the win.
Haylee Hanson tallied 21 points to lead the game, Laurie Rogers scored 11 points and had 11 rebounds, while Ashley Fischbach added 10 more for the Monarchs.
Rachel Guthmiller led the Chargers with 19 points, followed by Lauren Wittler with 11 more plus 11 rebounds.

Seventh place in the Class “B” girls’ basketball State Tournament was claimed by the top seeded Faith Lady Longhorns, after escaping with a 50-45 win over the Avon Lady Pirates, Saturday afternoon in Aberdeen.
Faith and Avon tied the score up five times throughout the game, and passed the lead back and fourth four times, until the Lady Longhorns took the victory.
Kailyn Groves totaled 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Lady Longhorns, while Jayden Shoemaker added 11 more.
Lauren Sees had 28 points and eight rebounds for the Lady Pirates to lead all players, while Cheylee Nagel followed with eight.

First place in the Class “A” Girls’ Basketball State Tournament was earned by the St. Thomas More Cavaliers, with a 54-41 win over the Madison Lady Bulldogs Saturday night in Watertown.
Madison had a one point lead twice in the game, plus three ties throughout, but the Cavaliers caught fire and had a 15-point lead within 30 seconds of the game to take the win.
Aislinn Duffy led the Cavaliers with a game-high of 26 points and six rebounds, while Kayla Jacobson and Alex Kandolin each tallied eight more points.
The Lady Bulldogs were led by Jessi Giles with 15 points, while Olivia Rud followed with nine and led the rebounders with nine also.

West Central 50, McCook Central-Montrose 44
The West Central Trojans earned third place in the Class “A” Girls’ Basketball State Tournament after a 50-44 win over the McCook Central-Montrose Fighting Cougars Saturday night in Watertown.
Both teams fought hard for the win. The Fighting Cougars had a one-point lead at the end of the first stop, then the score was evened out at 21 at half-time. Another one point lead at the end of the third gave the Fighting Cougars hope, but the Trojans came back with an eight-point lead in the last quarter to take the win.
Taylor Rajewich led the Trojans with 13 points, Ashlyn Macdonald followed with 11 points, while Kali Nelson tallied 10 more.
Morgan Koespell led the Fighting Cougars with a game-high of 16, and she led the rebounders with 11, while Natalie Gottlob totaled 10 points.

The sixth-seeded Aberdeen Roncalli Lady Cavaliers won a match over the top seeded Belle Fourche Broncs, to claim fifth place in the girls’ basketball Class “A” State Tournament, Saturday in Watertown.
The Broncs led the game by eight points in the first quarter which ended in their favor, but after half time the Lady Cavaliers caught fire and took the win.
Mariah Winegar and Grace Imbery both scored nine points to lead the Lady Cavaliers, while Kelsey Peterson followed with eight.
Mandee Williamson of Belle Fourche led all scorers with 14 points and five rebounds, while Taylor Hanson tallied six more points.

The Vermillion Tanagers claimed seventh place at the girls’ basketball Class “A” State Tournament after a 76-54 win over the Crow Creek Lady Chieftains, Saturday afternoon in Watertown.
Kasey Herbster led four players that reached double figures for the Tanagers with 21 points. Haleigh Melstad followed with 15 points, while Lexi Plitzuweit and Madisen Martinez each added 10 more.
The Lady Chieftains were led by Sarah Hunter with 13 points, while Marveen Ross and Haylee Langdeau both tallied 11 more points.
