Wessington Springs defeats Iroquois/Doland girls

IROQUOIS — Seventh-seeded Wessington Springs earned its second win of the season with a 60-49 victory against sixth-seeded Iroquois/Doland in the consolation semifinals of the 281 Conference Girls’ Basketball Tournament on Monday.

The Lady Spartans, who are now 2-9, outscored Iroquois/Doland 14-2 in the opening quarter and led 33-14 at the half. The 19-point advantage allowed Wessington Springs to hold on for the win despite a 20-of-33 effort from the free-throw line for the Lady Chiefs, who are now 3-6.

Alyssa Grohs had 13 points and nine assists to lead the Lady Spartans. Kirstie Munsen had 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Makayla Dornbusch had 10 points and Angie Paulson and Avery Orth each added nine points.

Orth also had a team-high four steals for Wessington Springs.

Katie Dubro led the way for Iroquois/Doland with 16 points, which included 11 of 16 from the free-throw line. Kaitlyn Maas had 10 points, while Harley Nelson and Jorja Huls finished with nine and eight points, respectively.

Dubro also had team highs with 10 rebounds and two assists.

Wessington Springs will travel to play fifth-seeded James Valley Christian for the consolation title at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, while Iroquois/Doland hosts eighth-seeded Sunshine Bible Academy for seventh place at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Iroquois.
