Wessington Springs escapes with 281 boys title

WOLSEY – After upsetting the second seed, the third-seeded Wessington Springs Spartans were ready for the challenge in Friday night’s championship against the top-seeded Wolsey-Wessington Warbirds. The Spartans won the 281 boys championship Friday with a 47-43 victory in Wolsey.

The Warbirds hit the first two points of the game, but Wessington Springs’ Tyler Kole hit two three-point baskets to put the Spartans up 6-2 and the Warbirds did not lead again in the first half.

Wolsey-Wessington was able to tie the game at halftime and the two teams were tied at the end of the third quarter, but in the fourth quarter, clutch free throw shooting and timely baskets put Wessington Springs over the top.

The Spartans move to 7-3 on the year behind Jacob Messmer off the bench with 12 points and Mason Schelske with 11 points. Schelske led Wessington Springs with 10 rebounds.

Corbin Haarmeyer led Wolsey-Wessington (8-2) with nine points. Tristan Abbott led the Warbirds with eight rebounds.

Wolsey-Wessington hosts Potter County today, while the Spartans host Andes Central/Dakota Christian Tuesday.

WOONSOCKET — The Hitchcock-Tulare Patriots notched their second straight win of the season Friday night, posting a 52-47 win over the Sanborn Central/Woonsocket Blackhawks in the fifth-place, consolation championship game of the boys’ 281 Conference Tournament.

Zach Gilbert led the Patriots with 15 points and Kyle Hamilton chimed in with 11. Cody Wright led the rebounding corps for Hitchcock-Tulare with six boards and Jack Boomsma had two steals. The Patriots, now 2-7, will travel to Redfield on Tuesday night.

The Blackhawks got 17 points from Hayden Beigh, 10 points and four assists from Tryce Slykhuis and 10 boards from Brady Larson as they fall to 4-7 on the season. The Blackhawks are in action today versus Freeman at the DSU Classic in Mitchell.

Other games
Highmore-Harrold used a 63-53 victory against James Valley Christian to claim third place.

Iroquois-Doland inked its first win of the season with a 69-50 victory against Sunshine Bible Academy in the seventh-place game.
