Wessington Springs wins boys 3200 relay at HWDR

SIOUX FALLS — Wessington Springs claimed the top spot in the Class B boys’ 3,200-meter relay during the opening day of the 96th Annual Howard Wood Dakota Relays on Friday.

The Spartans used the combination of AJ Neely, Blake Larson, Carter Grohs and Dylan Schimke to record a winning time of 8:43.24.

Hanson was second at 8:43.48, while Northwestern was third at 8:49.50.

James Valley Christian was fourth in the girls’ 3,200 relay. Abby Hasart, Rhayonna Hood, Abby Kate Hamilton and Karilyn Wieting combined for a time of 10:35.37.

The Wolsey-Wessington girls were sixth in the 3,200 relay at 10:37.32. Members of the team were Kendal Uttecht, Lainey Uttecht, Kelsie Roberts and Payton Kemnitz.

James Valley Christian and Wolsey-Wessington were sixth and seventh, respectively, in the girls’ Class B medley relay.

The Lady Vikings had a time of 4:37.06, while Wolsey-Wessington (Mya Boomsma, Kailynn Dorris, Lainey Uttecht, Kemnitz) had a time of 4:38.24.

Wolsey-Wessington also finished eighth in the boys’ Class B medley relay. Joey Hoverson, Moshe Richmond, Carson Zomer and Caleb Richmond combined for a time of 3:53.09.

Sean Korsmo of Bismarck (N.D.) won the boys’ 800 special event. He had a winning time of 1:55.25 to edge Isaac Davelaar of Sioux Falls Christian, who had a time of 1:55.48.

Holly Duax of Sioux City West won the girls’ 200 special event, stopping the clock in 25.34. Ellen Merkley of Sioux Falls Lincoln was second at 25.42.

Sioux Falls Roosevelt won the inaugural 1,600 coed relay in 3:42.15, while Yankton was second at 3:44.35.

The final day of the Howard Wood Dakota Relays is today, with competition beginning at 9 a.m.
