Wildcats defeat Warbirds in opener

WOLSEY — Northwestern began its Class B state title defense with a sweep against Wolsey-Wessington on Thursday at the Wolsey-Wessington gym.
The Wildcats won the match using set scores of 25-15, 25-6 and 25-11.
Tya Weideman and Evy Peterson each had three aces for Northwestern. Sydney Schell recorded a team-high 13 kills, while Caitlyn Fischbach and Riley Grandpre had nine and eight kills, respecitvely.
Madalyn Groft tallied 30 assists for the Wildcats, while Peyton Groft had 12 digs. Grandpre and Schell each had a pair of assisted blocks.
Lizzi Brandt and Shayla Muilenburg were 6 of 6 serving for Wolsey-Wessington. Brandt also was 11 of 13 hitting, while Taylor Sprecher converted on 7 of 10 spikes and had a pair of kills.

Muilenburg was 24 of 27 setting, while Kailen Krause had two assists on 15 of 16 sets.
Chantel Haider had a team-high 14 digs for the Lady Warbirds, while Muilenburg and Sprecher each had a pair of blocks.
Wolsey-Wessington will face Corsica-Stickney on Sept. 5 in Stickney.
