Williams edges Johnson for second victory in Miller

Britt Williams of Ft. Pierre held off a furious charge by Lorin Johnson of Miller to earn his first victory in more than five years on Sunday in the WISSOTA Midwest modified feature race at Miller Central Speedway.
Williams took the lead from his second row spot, while the father-and-son tandem of Lorin and Lane Johnson started in the fourth row and didn’t get any help from yellow flags. Williams never put a wheel wrong and Lorin Johnson couldn’t pass him once he caught him. It was Williams second feature in the Mid mods and his first since June 12, 2012. Lorin Johnson, Lane Johnson, Dylan Zabel and James Reimer trailed at the finish.
The Pump N Pak pure stock main was a four car battle all the way on the fast track. Mike Hammill led all of the laps, but there was always somebody beside him with two more behind them. At the end, it was Hammill winning his eighth feature in the class, tying Kyle Elsen for fifth on the win list. Luke Johnson, Jordan Rawstern, Brandon Hammill and Destrie Morris rounded out the top five.
The WISSOTA street stocks were next with Broc Stout jumping off the front row and trying to run away from the field. Point leader Blayne Baloun was trapped in a dogfight for second with Jodie Michaelsohn. Baloun finally got by with three laps to go and got up to Stout’s bumper but ran out of laps. It was Stout, Baloun, Michaelsohn, Leonard Ferguson and Warren Pourier rounding out the top five. It was Stout’s 16th feature win at the speedway.
Kent Arment had come into the evening with 599 feature wins, but looked to have an uphill battle as both of his cars broke down during the heats. But when the WISSOTA modified main started he quickly moved into second, breathing down Tyler McDonald’s neck. Arment took the lead on a lap six restart and hung on for one lap. McDonald led the next two laps by a bumper but he finally got away and won over Arment, Duane Zabel, Nick Grehl and Lorin Johnson. It was McDonald’s eighth feature win at the Miller Central Speedway.
The WISSOTA super stocks were next. With a good field of cars, the top dogs Kip Myers and Cole Searing were starting in the fourth row. Dale Tomes led the first two laps before going wide off of turn two and nearly going over the edge, which put Taylor Schmidt in the lead. Schmidt led three laps before Myers and Searing broke out of traffic and passed him on both sides down the backstretch with Searing leading the final ten laps over Kip Myers, Schmidt, Tyler Myers and Kipp DeGroot. It was Searing’s 31st feature win in the supers and came the night after a bad wreck at Huron destroyed his car. He was driving his old car on loan from the new owner.
The WISSOTA late models capped off the night with Brian Diede grabbing the lead from outside pole and leading all the way with David McDonald giving chase all 20 laps before settling for second. Dustin Arthur and Quentin Myers put on their own battle for third with Arthur nosing out Myers for third. James Hoing finished fifth. It was Diede’s sixth feature win at the Miller Central Speedway.
With Dakota State Fair Speedway off this Saturday, there will be racing Saturday and Sunday at Miller Central Speedway.
Both nights will feature all classes. Saturday night’s races will include a $1,500-to-win feature race in the late model division. Racing begins at 7 p.m. both nights.
