WindRiders ABATE rides in 24th annual Toy Run

HURON — Third Street was jammed with motorcycles Saturday morning, as bikers gathered at the Red Arrow Bar to prepare for the 24th annual WindRiders ABATE (A Brotherhood for Awareness, Training and Education) Toy Run.
The Toy Run is a fundraiser and has been a way for the WindRiders to give to the community by donating toys to the Salvation Army. The toys are then distributed to families in need, as Christmas gifts. The riders pay to enter and make donations, and the public will also come to donate toys.
“We also take a certain amount of money and purchase gifts from the wish list for the Angel Tree to help families out and make sure they have a good Christmas” Schaun Schnathorst, WindRiders President, said, “We will also donate time this year to do bell ringing and we will have a float in the Parade of Lights.”

Take off was at noon, heading south down Dakota Ave., toward the first pit stop, Woonsocket, then contining on to Wessington Springs, Gann Valley, Miller, Wessington, Wolsey before arriving back to Huron.
Schnathorst has been president of the club for five years and is ready to pass the torch, while still remaining an active member of the club.
“It’s time to let someone else take over and get some new ideas,” Schnathorst said. “It’s definitely been fulfilling being president. I’ve met a lot of great people and I’ve been a rider all my life. Some people have the perception of bikers that isn’t always positive, but I would like to say they are some of the nicest people I’ve ever met.”
Last year the turnout was approximately 82 bikers, and usually between 70 to 100 will participate in the ride.
