Wins by Rustlers, Vikings highlight second day of Holiday Classic

Posted

HURON — Area boys’ basketball teams took to the Huron Arena floor on Saturday, for the second day of the Huron Holiday Classic.
A full day of games took place, featuring last minute game-winning shots, defensive stands and at least one slam dunk.
Here are synopsis of the five games that took place Saturday.

Miller 58, San Cent-Woon 55
The final game of the Huron Holiday Classic may have been the best of the day, as some last second heroics - from both teams - kept the final decision in doubt until the final buzzer.
In the end, an old-fashioned three-point play from Miller’s Karst Hunter with 1.5 seconds on the clock clinched the 58-55 win for the Rustlers over the Sanborn Central-Woonsocket Blackhawks.
Miller opened up a double-digit lead in the second period before the Blackhawks began climbing back into contention, carving the lead to a single point, 30-29 at the half.
SC-W pulled ahead in the third quarter and maintained that lead until the final minute of the game.
Steven Fernholz, who led the Rustlers with 14 points, hit a three-pointer to put Miller up by a single point. A SC-W turnover turned into a Miller field goal, but a three-pointer from Trey Weber, the Blackhawks leading scorer with 16.6 seconds left set the stage for the final shot for Hunter.
Weber’s 22 points led all scorers in the game and teammate Noah Dickson added 17 in a two-pronged Blackhawk attack. Dickson shared rebounding honors with Trent Kingsbury, as each player had eight.
Hunter ended the game with 12 points and Devin Letsche dented double digits with 10 for Miller. Hunter Russell led the Rustler rebounders with eight caroms.
Miller, now 4-1, will be back in action on Tuesday when it hosts De Smet, while Sanborn Central-Woonsocket suffered its first loss on the season and is also 4-1. The Blackhawks travel to Bridgewater-Emery on Tuesday.
