Wolsey-Wessington earns win against JVC in 3B

WOLSEY — The third-seeded Wolsey-Wessington Warbirds escaped with a 54-48, come-from-behind victory over the James Valley Christian Vikings in the Region 3B boys’ basketball tournament held Tuesday night in Wolsey.
The Warbirds finished the first quarter with a two-point advantage, but the Vikings made a comeback, leading by two points at the end of both the second and third periods before Wolsey-Wessington mounted a comeback for the win.
Lynden Williams led the Warbirds with 16 points and 10 rebounds, Carter Mehling followed with 13 points, all in the second half, while Mark Hamilton tallied 10 more. Wolsey-Wessington improved its season record to 14-6 with the win, and will tangle with Castlewood at 5 p.m. on Friday in Madison with a ticket to the Round of 16 at stake.
The Vikings finished their season with a 10-12 record and were led by Ryan Wager with 23 points to lead all scorers. Darrian Hood followed with 12 points and five rebounds.

Castlewood 71, Iroquois 45
CASTLEWOOD — The second-seeded Castlewood Warriors dominated a game against the Iroquois Chiefs, with a 71-45 win, Tuesday night in the Regional tournament.
The Warriors progress in the Region 3B boys’ basketball tournament and will battle with the Wolsey-Wessington Warbirds at 5 p.m. on Friday in Madison, to determine which team will advance to the Round of 16.
Brandon Benike led the Warriors with a game-high of 26 points, also leading the rebounders with nine. Ryder Johnson followed with 11 points, while Caleb DeKam tallied 10 more.
Keistan Dubro scored 16 points to lead the Chiefs, while Caleb warden followed with seven more. Iroquois ended its season with a 4-18 record after the loss.

De Smet 58, Deubrook Area 43
DE SMET — The De Smet Bulldogs took a 58-43 victory over the Deubrook Area Dolphins, in boys’ basketball action held Tuesday night in the Region 3B tournament.
Gage Gruenhagen led all scorers with 27 points for the Bulldogs, who improved to 10-11.

Deubrook, which was seeded fifth, was led by Jack Bandemeer with 16 points. The Dolphins ended the season with an 8-13.
Fourth-seeded De Smet  will face top-seeded Arlington in the semifinals at  6:30 p.m., Friday in Madison. the winner advances to the Class B Round of 16.

Region 4B
Sanborn Central-Woonsocket 67, Oldham-Ramona/Rutland 55
MITCHELL — The second-seeded Sanborn Central-Woonsocket Blackhawks cruised into the third round of the Region 5B boys’ basketball tournament Tuesday night, with a 67-55 win over the Oldham-Ramona/Rutland Raiders.
The Raiders jumped out early, holding a slim three-point lead after the first quarter, but the Blackhawks got rolling in the second period, outscoring O-R/R 18-13 to take a lead they would never give up.
The Blackhawks, now 16-5, will move on to face Chester Area, at 8 p.m. Friday night at the Corn Palace. O-R/R ends its season with a record of 11-11.
Noah Dickson torched the cords for 21 points and hauled down 16 rebounds for the Blackhawks. Trey Weber netted 16, Jared Goldammer added 14 and Trent Kingsbury filled the stat sheet with 12 points, nine assists and five steals for Sanborn Central-Woonsocket.
Hunter Breske scoreD 20 points for the Raiders, while James Brown chipped in 15. Taylor Hojer scored 10 and grabbed 14 boards.

Milbank 57, Redfield-Doland 46
REDFIELD — The Milbank Bulldogs pulled off an opening round upset Tuesday night, defeating the Redfield-Doland Pheasants 57-46 in Region 1A boys’ basketball action.
The Bulldogs had come in seeded fifth in the region, while the Pheasants came in seeded fourth. The Pheasants owned a 61-57 win over the Bulldogs earlier this month.
Max McCulloch scored 18 points and hauled down 10 rebounds — both game-high totals — to lead the Bulldogs into a second round date with top-seeded Sisseton on Friday night in Sisseton.
Derrick Aho added 14 and Jake Fox cashed in 11 as Milbank improves to 9-12 with the win.
For Redfield-Doland, Dalton Howe scored 12 points and claimed five rebounds, while Mic Utecht added 11 on the night. The Pheasants’ season ends with a record of 10-11.
The Pheasants outscored Milbank from the field, but lost the game at the free-throw line, where Redfield-Doland was only 2-4 in the game, while the Bulldogs hit 14-19

LAKE PRESTON — In a battle between the No. 8 and 9 seeds, Lake Preston emerged with a 65-53 victory against Wessington Springs in the opening round of the Region 3B boys’ basketball tournament on Monday.
The eighth-seeded Divers grabbed a 20-14 lead after the opening quarter and slightly increased it throughout the rest of the contest.
Paydon Casper, Jack Hasche and Byron Buman all finished with 18 points for Lake Preston, which improved to 6-15. Jasper Denison added nine points.
Casper also had 12 rebounds to help the Divers to a 39-25 advantage on the boards. Buman had a team-high seven assists, while Hasche and Denison each had two steals.
John Witte recorded a game-high 31 points, including five 3-pointers, to lead Wessington Springs. Jacob Messmer had eight points, while Cooper Hainy added five points.
Gunnar Brandenburg snagged six rebounds for the Spartans, who ended the season at 4-17. Witte had team highs with three assists and four steals.
Lake Preston advanced to face top-seeded Arlington on Tuesday.
