HURON — Five players, who helped Wolsey-Wessington to the Class 9B state championship this season, have been named to the Class 9B All-State Football Team, which is selected by the South Dakota Football Coaches Association.

Senior Tristan Abbott was named to the offensive unit for the Warbirds, while senior Corbin Haarmeyer and junior Marty Gohn were named to the defensive unit. Senior Jake Williams and sophomore Sterlin Bonin received honorable mention.

Abbott, who was selected at the wide receiver spot, had 42 receptions this season for 834 yards and nine touchdowns. He also carried the ball 19 times for 177 yards and a touchdown.

During his career, Abbott had 90 catches for 1,854 yards and 21 touchdowns.

“Tristan has worked hard the last three years to become one of the best athletes in the state,” Wolsey-Wessington coach Gordon Hooks said. “He is a kid who grew into loving the weight room and understands the meaning of hard work.”

Haarmeyer had six solo tackles and an interception from his defensive back position this season for the Warbirds. He finished his career with 25 solo tackles and two interceptions.

Despite receiving defensive recognition in Class 9B, Haarmeyer had a major impact on the offensive side of the ball this season from the quarterback spot. He was 90 of 163 passing for 1,712 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Haarmeyer also carried the ball 88 times for 590 yards and seven touchdowns.

“Replacing a kid, who started for three years and was an Elite 45 athlete is not easy,” Hooks said. “I feel Corbin has done a great job with it being his first year at QB. He has a very good arm and has been able to maintain our dual threat at the QB position.”

Gohn recorded 19 solo tackles this season for Wolsey-Wessington from the defensive back spot to bring his career total to 32 solo tackles.

“He is a sports-minded kid, who loved to be in the gym,” Hooks said of Gohn. “He worked hard in the offseason to become more explosive and it shows in his performance on the field.”

Williams served as the defensive leader this season for the Warbirds. He recorded 50 solo tackles, in addition to having five sacks, an interception, two forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery.

“Jake has become a captain and leader of the defense this season, replacing a three-year starter in that role,” Hooks said. “Jake has stepped in and stepped up when the team needs him most. Jake is a very intelligent kid and his work ethic/sportsmanship and leadership is something many of our younger players look up to.”

Williams finished his career at Wolsey-Wessington with 81 solo tackles, five sacks, two interceptions, two forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries. On the offensive side of the ball, he had eight receptions for 174 yards and two touchdowns.

Bonin at 5-foot-10 and 230 pounds, paved the way for the offensive attack for the Warbirds from his lineman position. He also anchored the defensive front.
