Wolsey-Wessington ready for another tough test in 9AA

Posted

WOLSEY — Not many teams have been able to match the numbers put up this season by the Wolsey-Wessington football team as it went undefeated during the regular season to finish 8-0.
The average margin of victory during the regular season for the Warbirds was 38.5 points. Preventing that number from being any greater was a 38-36 double-overtime win against Bon Homme during the second week of the season.
Those two teams will meet again today in the semifinals of the Class 9AA playoffs at 7 p.m. in Wolsey.
In the earlier meeting, the Cavaliers built an early advantage and were able to carry a 22-8 lead into the half.

The Warbirds would rally in the second half to tie the game at 22-22 with 2:58 to play in regulation.
A failed conversion attempt by Bon Homme during its second possession of the overtime provided Wolsey-Wessington the opportunity it needed to escape with the victory.
The Warbirds, who are now 10-0, opened the postseason with a 60-6 victory against Miller/Highmore-Harrold and then dispatcheded Irene-Wakonda 78-28 in the quarterfinals.
The Cavaliers, whose only loss of the season came against Wolsey-Wessington, bring a 9-1 record into tonight’s matchup. They defeated Deuel 50-12 in their playoff opener and then edged Gregory 14-12 in the quarterfinals.
In the other Class 9AA semi-final game, Garretson, which is also 10-0, hosts Kimball/White Lake at 7 p.m. today.
The winners of today’s games will meet for the Class 9AA state title at 1 p.m. on Nov. 8 at the DakotaDome in Vermillion.
Wolsey-Wessington is looking for its first trip back to the finals since winning the 2015 9AA championship. The Warbirds also reached the Class 9A title game in 2014.
Bon Homme is looking for its first Class 9AA championship game appearance. The Cavaliers won back-to-back Class 11B championships in 1994 and 1995 after finishing as the classes runner-up in 1988.
