WOLSEY — The Wolsey-Wessington Warbirds took a sizeable step toward a return trip to the Class 9AA championship game, as they posted a 78-28, mercy-rule shortened win over the Irene-Wakonda Eagles in a quarterfinal game Thursday night.
And the teams only played for one half, as the Warbirds cruised to a 44-14 lead after one quarter.
The Eagles had no answer for the potent Warbird rushing attack, as Lynden Williams scored five touchdowns on the night, as the senior running back carried the ball 11 times for a whopping 328 yards and five touchdowns, scoring on runs of 38, 56, 19, 60 and 37 yards in the game. His running mate in the Warbird backfield, DeVante Luelleman ran 10 times for 162 yards and four touchdowns. Diedrich Offt scored twice as well. Wolsey-Wessington pushed its record to 10-0 on the season.

The Warbirds held Irene-Wakonda quarterback Trey King in check, limiting him to a 22-31 night throwing the ball for 185 yards and three touchdowns. King also scored on a 60-yard run early in the game but wasn’t able to do much on the ground the remainder of the game, as he only ended the game with 66 yards rushing.
Williams led the Warbird defense with nine tackles, while Offt added eight and Tanner Horn registered seven stops in the game for Wolsey-Wessington.
Wolsey-Wessington will host Bon Homme on Nov 2. in the 9AA semifinals. The Warbirds defeated the Cavaliers 38-36 in overtime on Aug. 27. It was the lone blemish on Bon Homme’s record, as they will enter the contest with a mark of 9-1 on the season.
Other 9AA quarterfinal games found Kimball-White Lake upsetting previously undefeated Arlington 29-0, while Garretson, the other undefeated team in 9AA, defeated Webster Area 44-29.
