WOLSEY-WESSINGTON — Fifth and sixth grade teacher of Wolsey-Wessington School, Lindsay Haider, recently received a $10,000 grant from the Monsanto Grow Rural Education Grant Fund. Haider plans to purchase five Oculus Rift virtual reality systems (in conjunction with a state Innovation Grant) and other hands-on learning materials to enhance student learning for her students. According to Wolsey-Wessington School Elementary Principal, Carol Rowen, “This will be a great opportunity for our students. Just imagine exploring places all over the world without leaving the classroom, understanding communities in crisis by stepping into their shoes, and traveling to key events and places in history.  The most exciting factor the virtual reality system will bring to our students is to see them totally engaged with curiosity and wonder.”
The virtual reality systems will reside in the Wolsey-Wessington STEAM room, which is a room filled with hands-on science, technology, engineering, art, and math materials and tools provided by a state Innovation Grant. While the 5-6th grade students will primarily use the virtual reality systems, they will also be available for all students in grades 4-12.

“Thank you to Mrs. Haider for receiving this grant that puts more technology in our students’ hands,” said high school principal, Jennifer Boomsma-Kelsey.
