Zabel brothers capture checkered flags in Aberdeen

ABERDEEN — It was a family affair Friday night at the Brown County Speedway.

Or at least a Zabel family affair. Brothers Dawson and Dylan Zabel of Selby both claimed feature wins at the track with Dawson Zabel winning the Midwest Modified feature for the second straight week and Dylan Zabel following with the checkered flag in the Modified division.

“I really love this track,” Dawson Zabel said. “The car is working really good here. The right things have fallen the right way the past two weeks.”

Dawson, who cites Brown County Speedway as the family’s home track, picked up his first-ever win at the track last week. He followed up with a win this week in a race marred by multiple cautions.

“Every time I got my line set again and got in a rhythm, it seemed like a yellow came out,” he said. “But that’s all part of the deal.”

Dylan Zabel held off Tony Konold in the Modified feature, capturing his first career feature win in the process.

“We just keep grinding in the shop and trying different stuff,” Dylan said. “The experience is really coming into play now. We’ve been racing a little while now, so we’re starting to get to the point where we don’t make as many mistakes. It’s great to see the family get a couple wins (Friday night).”

It was a caution late in the Street Stock feature that opened the door for Maria Broksieck to grab the lead. Broksieck then held off Royce Jawaski down the stretch for her first win of the season at the track.

“Right in the center of the corner between (turn) one and two, there was some holes I was hitting,” Broksieck said. “Once I got smart enough to go around them, it was smooth sailing from there.”

Broksieck was battling in the front of the pack when race leader Jaden Christ spun around in the corner of turn two, but managed to avoid getting tangled up in a melee.

“Luck was on our side,” Broksieck said. “I never had any contact with the car that spun out. You hate to see them spin out and you hate to win that way, but glad our car kept running and we were good to go yet.”

Trever Nelson of Warner claimed his fourth checkered flag of the season in the Super Stocks, while Josh Skorczewski of Aberdeen led pole-to-checkered in the Late Model feature.
